从19世纪60年代世界上第一条城市地铁诞生至今，城市轨道交通因其具有占地少、载客量大、运载效率高、节省能源、污染少、使用寿命长等其他任何路面交通工具无法比拟的优势，再加上有自己的专用通行道，与城市道路没有平面交叉，不受市内道路交通的干扰等特点，已成为世界许多大都市客运交通的骨干。
