Abstract:
The ultrafine VC-10Co cemented carbides were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using sub-micron WC/nano Co and sub-micron WC/micron Co with nanocrystalline grains as the raw powders. The SPS process, microstructure and properties of the sintered samples were investigated. The prepared cemented carbides have all grain size of about 200 nm, but, the sample sintered by using sub-micron WC/micron Co powders has better mechanical properties than that sintered by sub-inicro WC/nano Co as raw materials, for example, relative density of 98.0%, hardness of HRA is 94.5 and fracture toughness of 13.50 MPa(.)m(1/2). The sintering densification mechanisms were also analyzed based on the SPS process.
