Abstract:
This paper proposes a new type of bolted-assembly joint of an H-shaped beam to a square-HSS column in prefabricated steel structures. The FEMs were first verified by experiments using three joints, and FEA was subsequently performed to obtain the seismic property, pattern of contact force and slipping rule on the contact surfaces of 27 joints with various parameters. The parameters include the number of bolts, web bolt size, gap size between the bolt shank and bolt hole, and flange thickness. The yield and failure mechanism of the joint were revealed. The analysis demonstrates that the slip enabled improved bolted joint deformation capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capability without significantly decreasing the ultimate bearing capacity; the energy is dissipated through slipping on the contact surface between the cover plate and beam flange, and through plastic deformation of the beam and cover plate.
