Abstract:
We demonstrated stable pulses generation at 2 mu m in a passively Q-switched thulium-doped all-fiber laser using a few layer graphene thin films. The thulium-doped gain fiber was cladding-pumped through a pump combiner by two multimode diode lasers at 790 nm in a unidirectional ring cavity. The maximum output power the Q-switched fiber laser was 4.5 mW and the single pulse energy was 85 nJ at 53 kHz repetition rate, and the pulse width was 1.4 mu s. The pulse width and the repetition rate of the Q-switched fiber laser can be changed along with the pump power. In addition, we also demonstrated the mode-locked thulium-doped all-fiber laser with graphene oxide depositing on a broadband reflective mirror as a passive mode-locker in a similar cavity configuration. The mode-locked fiber laser produced average output power of 1.8 mW and the repetition rate was 3.17 MHz, corresponding to the single pulse energy of 0.56 nJ. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of graphene or graphene oxide saturable absorber operation at 2 mu m wavelength.
