Abstract:

In order to improve the defects of single self-drilling screw connection and self-piercing riveting (SPR) in cold-formed steel structure, this paper presented a screw-rivet hybrid connection with complementary advantages. Shear tests on 132 hybrid connections were conducted. The differences of pure screw connection, pure SPR and hybrid connection were compared and analyzed. The effects of sheet thickness, sheet thickness ratio and fastener arrangement on shear properties and failure mechanism were studied. The applicability of the existing direct summation methods was also investigated, and then the improved calculation method of shear capacity of hybrid connection was proposed. The results show that hybrid connection could fully combine the advantages of screw connection and SPR by effectively improving the bearing capacity, stiffness and ductility of pure screw connection, and the deformation capacity and energy dissipation of pure SPR. Sheet thickness and sheet thickness ratio are key factors affecting shear properties and failure modes, respectively. The connection arrangement has significant influence on mechanical properties and failure mechanism. Since the mechanical mechanism and behavior of different connections vary greatly, the existing direct summation method is not safe for the calculation of bearing capacity of hybrid connection. In contrast, based on the reduction method of capacity, the calculation method proposed in this paper for shear capacity is more accurate, which could not only consider more comprehensive failure mode but also be more safe and reliable in design. © 2020, Editorial Office of Journal of Building Structures.
