Abstract:

According to the current seismic design code, it is possible not to obtain the expected failure mechanism of 'strong column and weak beam' for reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures without infill walls at the bottom. The equivalent diagonal bracing-frame model was established to consider the interaction between the infill wall and frame members. Calculation of equivalent damping ratio and the equivalent stiffness were improved for an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom system. The displacement-based seismic design method was presented for RC frame structures with infill wall. Aiming at different performance levels for a five story RC frame structure without infill walls at the bottom, displacement-based seismic performance design were carried out in order to satisfy the performance levels of serviceability, life-safety, and collapse prevention by means of structural pushover analysis. Furthermore it is proved that this method is feasible by means of both capacity spectrum method and dynamic elasto-plastic time history analysis method. Therefore it can be shown that performance-based seismic design can be achieved by taking both advantages and disadvantages of infill walls to the frame members into account by means of the advanced displacement-based seismic design method. © 2019, Editorial Office of Journal of Building Structures.
