Abstract:

6 concrete columns reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars and stirrups and 1 hybrid-reinforced concrete column were tested under constant axial load and lateral cyclic quasi-static load. The influence of the volumetric ratio of stirrups, the axial load level, the shear span ratio and the longitudinal reinforcement on the seismic performance was discussed. The test shear strength of the specimens were compared with theoretical results of different codes. The results show all the 4 short GFRP-reinforced concrete columns fail in shear failure. The other 2 long GFRP-reinforced concrete columns and the hybrid-reinforced concrete column are flexural failure. The hysteretic curves of GFRP-reinforced concrete columns have significant pinch phenomenon, and the energy dissipation capacity is at a relatively low level compared with hybrid-reinforced concrete columns. The traditional evaluation method of ductility coefficient can not objectively evaluate the seismic performance of GFRP-reinforced concrete columns. The integrated performance index can embody the bearing capacity and deformability. The integrated performance index increases with the volumetric ratio of stirrups increasing, the shear span ratio increasing and the axial load level decreasing, while the seismic performance of the specimens improves. And the theoretical shear strength is relatively conservative in general. The results of CSA-S806-12 and GB 50608-10 codes are too conservative while ACI 440.1R-15 code predicts well for the shear strength of the specimens. © 2019, The Editorial Board of Journal of Basic Science and Engineering.
