Abstract:

Variable Message Board (VMS) is an important carrier to transmit real-time road traffic information, but there are still some problems such as low visibility caused by the overload of text information on the page. In this paper, the long VMS was selected as the research object, and the visual recognition time and understanding error rate of 42 drivers under the five kinds of text information of 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 were obtained by static cognitive experiment. Based on descriptive analysis and statistical test, the influence of text information content on drivers' visual characteristics was gradually clarified, and the threshold of information content was preliminarily determined, and the static cognitive experimental results were verified by dynamic driving simulation experiments. The results show that the information content of VMS characters in long strip has a significant impact on the driver's visual recognition time and understanding error rate. When the number of characters exceeds 20 characters, the driver's visual recognition characteristics obviously deteriorate. © 2022, Editorial Department of Journal of Wuhan University of Technology.
