Abstract:

Asphalt binder is the main material that has become available for pavement construction for many years, and the environmental pollution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from asphalt binder is increasingly being recognized. In this study, the VOCs emission of asphalt binder was qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed based on the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in the laboratory. The inhibition effect of VOCs inhibitors including activated carbon (AC), expanded graphite (EG), Mg/Al hydrotalcite (layered double hydroxides, LDH) on the VOCs emission of asphalt binder was explored. The results show that the inhibited asphalt binder with 5% AC has the best environmental benefits. Besides, the analysis of ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol potential (SOAP) show that the reduction in the total VOCs concentration of asphalt binder is not representative to the reduction of its pollution to the ecological environment. This study provides a potential solution to inhibit the VOCs emission of asphalt binder. © 2024 The Author(s).
