Abstract:

Intelligent connected truck platoon is advantageous in reducing driver costs, reducing fuel consumption, and improving transportation efficiency, which is a new trend in the development of freight transportation in the future. As an emerging role in the connected and automated environment, the driver of the leading vehicle for a truck platoon is crucial to ensure a safe and smooth operation of the truck platoon. Through a systematic review of relevant literatures, standards, and enterprise survey, the research status of the driving capability requirements for the leading vehicle driver of an intelligent connected truck platoon is summarized. The general situation of a truck platoon such as the overall architecture, automation classification standard, and driving mode is presented. The types of components for the driving scene of the truck platoon are concluded, and the boundary scenes beyond the scope of vehicle design and operation are summarized. The capability requirements of the leading vehicle driver in each boundary scenario were analyzed. The role and responsibility of the leading vehicle driver of the truck platoon in different functional scenarios are summarized. The driving capability needs of the leading truck driver in the aspects of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and mental state were obtained, based on the basic driving capability requirements of traditional truck drivers and test safety inspectors of autonomous driving vehicles as well as combination with the boundary scene and formation function-corresponding driving capability requirements of the truck platoon. The study results are helpful for more scientific and reasonable selection, training, and assessment for the leading vehicle driver of the intelligent connected truck platoon. © 2024 Chang'an University.
