Abstract:

The experimental study and numerical simulation by ANSYS are conducted to the 1:10 reduced scale suspend-dome model of the badminton gymnasium for 2008 Olympic Games. The mechanical performances of the model are studied under self-weight load at the state of single-layer dome before cable is tensioned, at the stage of construction, under design load and even 3 times' load, and that during loaded until it breaks down. By comparing the value drawn from ANSYS and experiment, the theoretic and experimental data of the members' axial force, the joints' displacement, the horizontal displacements of the top points of the columns and the ultimate load are available. The influence of unsymmetrieal layout of the live load on the integral stability is studied, thus gets the form of ultimate destroy. The study indicates that the theoretical value and the experimental value matches well under the lower load, but the difference of them become large under larger load and the experimental integral stability is lower than the theoretical value. The analysis shows that the initial defect affects the performance largely under large load and the numerical simulation can hardly involve all the initial defects. The stability of the suspend-dome is sensitive to the layout of the live load, and the stability factor computed by ANSYS is larger than that of the experiment by 40%, which should be considered in design and construction. The ultimate breakdown form is due to the expansion of losing stability from the local buckling to the whole structure.
