Abstract:
In order to evaluate and predict the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete according to its pore structure, the freeze-thaw resistance and pore structure of concretes with different mix proportions were investigated in this study. The fractal theory was employed to characterize the pore structure of concrete, and the deterioration of pore structure due to the effect of freezing and thawing was assessed in all the concrete mixtures. The results indicated that: first, the deteriorations of pore structures of ordinary concretes were worse than those of air-entrained concretes; second, the decrement rate of fractal dimension of pore surface is effective to describe the deterioration of pore structure due to the effect of freezing and thawing; third, an evident relationship could be found between the durability factor and the decrement rate of fractal dimension. © 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers.
