Abstract:

In this paper, the mechanism of mode-locking using a semiconductor saturable absorption mirror (SESAM) in solid laser was analyzed. We proposed a new opinion about how the SESAM works to realize mode-locking. Because the special structure of SESAM, when it works in a mode locking laser, SESAM is not just an absorber but also works as a gain medium together with solid crystal. In oscillator cavity, solid medium is pumped by an outside pump source (such as a semiconductor laser) and a light field Ec is produced. This light field Ec works as a pump source and pumps SESAM to produce another light field ES. And then solid gain medium works as an amplifier. When gain and loss keep balance in cavity, continuous wave mode-locking (CWML) is realized.
