Abstract:
For decades traffic control in road networks around the world has been successfully managed by the use of traffic signals. Applied design methods and parameters to signalise intersections are quite similar in European as well as Asian countries. But in some cases there are some basic differences in the design which could have a significant influence for instance on 'quality of traffic flow' and especially on 'road traffic safety'. This paper gives a descriptive overview and makes a comparison of some selected methods and parameters applied in Germany, Thailand and China in the design of signalised intersections and here especially in the design of signal programs. Based on a comparison study the authors make some recommendations for the application of investigated methods and parameters in the three countries. On this basis the reader of the paper can share experiences made by the experts.
