Abstract:

Effects of Nd addition including 0, 1%, 2%, 3%, on microstructure and ambient and elevated mechanical properties of Mg-4A1-1S alloy have been investigated. It is found that the mechanical properties of the alloy with Nd addition can be significantly improved as a result of the refinement of grain size and creation of acicular high melting point Al11 Nd3 phase. The ambient and elevated tensile strength of the alloy reaches 206 MPa and 138 MPa, respectively, with 2. 0% Nd addition, compared with that of alloy with out Nd addition, increased by 20 % and 14 %, respectively. With the further increase of Nd addition, the mechanical properties of the alloy are deteriorated due to the creation of bulk Al2 Nd phase in the alloy.
