Abstract:
The feasibility and controlling condition of partial nitrification induced by low dissolved oxygen (DO) was investigated under room temperature. A 14L sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed with real domestic wastewater was proposed. During the process of the programmed air supply decreasing from 60 to 28 L · h-1, the change from complete nitrification to partial nitrification occurred, and the nitrite accumulating rate exceeded 95 %, with the effluent nitrate concentration of less than 2.0 mg·L-1. Coupled with nitrite accumulation, significant nitrogen removal was observed and the maximum average nitrogen removal efficiency reached up to 54.6 % at the air flow of 32 L · h-1. After that, the air supply was elevated to 40 L·h-1 once again, and the partial nitrification still kept stable. The data indicated that by controlling low DO concentration, partial nitrification could be got from domestic wastewater under room temperature. During the long-term operation, the partial nitrification induced by low DO showed the perfect stability coupled with the significant nitrogen removal and could be operated under relative high DO condition.
