Abstract :
With the increase of soil consolidation degree, the pore water pressure induced by thermal loading drops dramatically. To conveniently and quickly calculate the thermal pore water pressure inside the soil under different overconsolidation states and quantify overconsolidation effect on thermal pore water pressure, a calculation method of thermal pore water pressure considering overconsolidation effect for saturated clay is proposed. The method is verified by the relevant experimental data, and good agreements were achieved. Through analyzing the influence mechanism of OCR on the thermal pore water pressure, three important findings were captured. (1) For overconsolidated clay, thermal pore water pressure decreases nonlinearly with the increase of OCR. (2) There is a critical threshold of OCR 4.3; when 1 < OCR <= 4.3 (slightly overconsolidated state), the ratio of compression line slope to recompression line slope (?) of overconsolidated clay is consistent with that of the normally consolidated clay, while when OCR > 4.3 (highly overconsolidated state), the value of ? is smaller than that of normally consolidated clay. (3) For highly overconsolidated clay (OCR > 4.3), considering the reducing of ? with OCR, the prediction accuracy of the thermal pore pressure calculation method has been greatly improved; especially when OCR equals 30, the prediction accuracy improves by 92.7% as temperature change achieves 35 degrees C.

Abstract :
基于地下水渗流连续性原理并结合达西定律,推导出了止水帷幕在不同插入深度下的圆形基坑涌水量计算公式.在此基础上,借鉴我国船舶工程中广泛采用的阻力系数法,提出了考虑悬挂式止水帷幕的地表沉降量计算方法.最后综合涌水量和地面沉降计算方法,以控水成本为目标,以基坑涌水量和坑外地面沉降量为约束条件,建立了一套完整的兼顾基坑设计安全性和经济性的悬挂式止水帷幕基坑控水设计优化方法,并以北京市通州区某工程场地为例,对所建立的控水优化方法进行了具体应用.

Abstract :
Clay soils, usually in an unsaturated state, are widely used as barrier materials in solid waste landfills. When the saturation of clay soils is high, the gas phase will be in the form of entrapped bubbles. The entrapped bubbles can directly affect the soil hydraulic behavior, which further affects solute transport in clay liner. Therefore, based on the stress balance, fluid mass conservation, and solute mass conservation equations, and combined with the relationship between pore water pressure and air pressure in unsaturated state, a coupled hydro-mechanical-chemical model has been put forward to study the influence of entrapped bubbles on solute transport process. Using the proposed model, a series of numerical calculations are carried out through the finite element simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics. The numerical results show that the increase of entrapped bubble content can enlarge soil deformation and slow down the rates of excess pore fluid pressure dissipation and solute transport. In particular, when the degree of saturation in air phase increases from 0 to 0.2, the difference of influence depth at the transport time 10 years reaches 28 cm, and the breakthrough time of solute is prolonged by 17.8 years.

Abstract :
It is well established that clays can exhibit semipermeable membrane behavior and osmotic efficiency is used to describe the membrane behavior of clays. Several experimental results have already verified that osmotic efficiency is not constant when pore-fluid chemistry changes. In this article, based on the mechanical balance, generalized Darcy's law and the principle of mass conservation, an improved fully coupled hydro-chemo-mechanical model is proposed for saturated clayey materials, in which osmotic efficiency is treated as a variable that depends on the solute concentration, grain density, porosity of soil, and cation exchange capacity. Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the influence of variable osmotic efficiency on solute transport. The results show that solute transport is very sensitive to osmotic efficiency and when the transport time is 10 years, the difference in influence depth reaches about 13.6 cm with constant (0.069) and variable (initially 0.069) osmotic efficiencies, this indicates that semipermeable membrane behavior of clays with variable osmotic efficiency restricts the solute transport effectively and slows down the solute movement strongly. The difference in breakthrough time reaches 15.8 years with osmotic efficiency (0.069). The proposed coupled model can be used to guide the design of clay liners and evaluate their service performance.

Abstract :
This research presents a simulation of hydraulic fracturing process in a naturally fractured reservoir based on a discrete fracture network (DFN) model coupling different kinds of pre-existing discontinuities. Natural fractures and bedding planes obtained from outcrops and downhole camera in the Ordos Basin of China are used to build a three-dimensional DFN model. The propagation of hydraulic fractures in the layered and naturally-fractured reservoir, and the complex interactions between hydraulic fractures, natural fractures and bedding planes are simulated using the displacement discontinuity method. The results show that strong interactions between hydraulic fractures and pre-existing discontinuities occur during fluid injection, causing complex fracture geometry. When the injection rate is 0.01 m3/min, only one major hydraulic fracture is induced, and crack growth along bedding interface does not occur since the fluid pressure is not high enough. With increasing injection rate (0.1 m3/min and 1.0 m3/min), natural fracture and bedding planes are activated, inducing multiple major hydraulic fractures and reticulated fractures. For each injection scheme, fracture geometry in the horizontal and vertical directions becomes more complex with the injection of fracturing fluid. However, fracture complexity in the horizontal direction is smaller than that in the vertical direction when the injection rate varies from 0.01 m3/ min to 1.0 m3/min. Besides, the results show that injection rate has a strong positive influence on the increment of fracture complexity.

Abstract :
Clays are widely used in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering applications and it is crucial to understand its behaviour for the dynamic field conditions. The presence of a temperature gradient across clayey soils that exhibit semi-permeable membrane (or osmotic) behaviour may promote a number of complex processes, including thermal expansion or consolidation, thermally induced osmosis, thermal diffusion, along with other flow and deformation processes. Chemical-osmosis and chemico-osmotic consolidation that are significant in isothermal conditions are also affected by temperature. Publications on chemical-osmosis, and to some extent thermo-osmosis behaviour of semi-permeable clays under coupled conditions are widely available. However, studies that include the influence of both thermo-osmosis and chemical-osmosis together are rare. In this paper, a fully coupled numerical model is presented to study the effects of both osmotic processes on thermo-hydromechanical-chemical behaviour of semi-permeable clays. Solute spread in a landfill clay liner is investigated under the combined influence of mechanical, thermal, and chemical loading. Model results show that the clay deformation is sensitive to thermo-osmosis; and the effects of thermo-osmotic consolidation, excess pore water dissipation, and the overall settlement increases with temperature. Variation of the source temperature from 40 degrees C to 80 degrees C yielded an increase of 11.3% of the peak soil settlement. Significant contribution of thermoosmosis on solute transport is noticed in this study and ignoring the process substantially deviate from the realism. Up to 80% overprediction of cadmium spread is observed in the clay liner when the thermo-osmotic processes are neglected.

Abstract :
We reveal the key epitaxial growth mechanisms of single-crystalline GaN on single-crystalline graphene. We demonstrate that an AlN nucleation layer is significantly important. On the one hand, the AlN nucleation layer provides the c-axis oriented driving force for the epitaxy of GaN on graphene along the out-of-plane orientation. On the other hand, AlN islands on the dangling bonds of graphene uniformly follow the in-plane orientation of single-crystalline graphene. Moreover, the nucleation density of AlN can be increased by adjusting the pretreatment conditions of graphene. The insight gained from this work may be applied to the epitaxy of other materials on the diverse two-dimensional materials.
