Hydroxy salt induced CoAl-LDH nanosheet composite membrane for pervaporation desalination SCIE

Abstract :

Pervaporation is a promising desalination technology. Developing high-performance and stable pervaporation membranes with high continuity structure remains a significant challenge. This study reports the development of a novel layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheet composite membrane fabricated using a hydroxyl salt induction method. This approach facilitated the in-situ nucleation and growth of the CoAl-LDH nanosheets on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate, reducing precursor concentration and enhancing preparation efficiency. The resulting cross-compatible architecture closely integrated the dense LDH nanosheet separation layer with the flexible PVDF support. The microstructure and morphology of the hydroxyl salt layer and its transformed CoAl-LDH composite membrane were comprehensively investigated. The optimized membrane was applied for pervaporation desalination (3 wt% NaCl, 50 degrees C), achieving a high flux of 38.4 kgm(-2)h(-1) and exceptional NaCl rejection of 99.9 %. It also demonstrated excellent tolerance to a wide salinity range, maintaining 99.6-99.9 % rejection even at 20 wt% NaCl, while the flux remained stable at 26.7 kgm(-2)h(-1). Long-term testing confirmed the consistent separation performance and operational stability, underscoring the great potential of this advanced membrane material for practical pervaporation desalination applications.

Abstract :

Azeotropic organic solvent mixture separation is common in the chemical industry but extremely difficult. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) shows great potential in organic solvent mixture separation due to its rigid micropores and excellent stability. However, due to the fast nucleation rate, it is a great challenge to prepare continuous ZIF-67 membrane layers with ultrathin thickness. In this study, a hydroxy salt layer with high inducible activity was synthesized as a precursor on different porous substrates to prepare ZIF-67 membranes at room temperature. The precursor layer enables an intact ZIF-67 membrane with an ultrathin thickness of 176 +/- 12 nm. The experimental and simulation results confirmed that the size sieving through the pore windows and the preferential adsorption of polar solvent molecules provide the ZIF-67 membrane an unprecedented separation performance such as high separation factors and fluxes, for four types of azeotropic organic solvent mixtures.

Abstract :

Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) membranes have great potential applications in nanofiltration. However, preparing continuous and intact ZIF membranes on the surface of a substrate remains challenging. In this study, we assembled ZIF-8 nanoparticles in situ in the pores of a porous alumina substrate via a freezing-assisted counter-diffusion method. Although a continuous ZIF-8 membrane was not formed on the surface of the sub-strate, the obtained nano-confined composite membrane was dense enough to separate antibiotics and salt. The rejection rate of tetracycline was above 99 %, while that of sodium chloride was below 20 %, demonstrating good antibiotic desalination performance. The permeance of the ZIF-8 membrane reached 23.5 LMH/bar. Due to the nano-confined structure, the obtained ZIF-8 composite membrane was robust. Besides, polishing the surface layer did not reduce the separation performance. Moreover, sulfurizing the ZIF-8 membrane improved its sta-bility in water. It also improved the permeance to 31.3 LMH/bar, which remained stable for 100 h. Therefore, the obtained robust ZIF-8 membrane and its derivative composite membrane fabricated via freezing-assisted counter-diffusion have great potential in antibiotic desalination.

Abstract :

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have been attracting intensive attention in membrane separation fields because of their ultrahigh specific surface areas, well-defined apertures, and variable topological characteristics. However, the aperture sizes of ZIFs are smaller than the kinetic diameters of most organic solvent molecules, which impedes their applications in organic solvent separation. Herein, we develop a thermal annealing-derived methodology for defect engineering on the ZIF-67 membrane. This post-synthetic modification not only expanded the aperture size of ZIF-67 but also repaired intercrystalline cracks in the polycrystalline ZIF-67 layer. By controlling the thermal annealing conditions, the permeability of the polycrystalline ZIF-67 membrane toward organic solvent nanofiltration was enhanced by two times. Moreover, the annealed ZIF-67 membrane showed a high rejection of more than 99.6% for dyes (Evans blue) and pharmaceutical molecules (tetracycline, vitamin B12). This work provides an avenue for the controllable modification of ZIFs membranes to broaden their applications.

Abstract :

Pervaporation is considered to have great potential for application in the field of organic-solvent dehydration. In this study, a type of keto-enamine-linked covalent organic framework TpPa (synthesized using the Schiff-base reaction of 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol [Tp] with p-phenylenediamine [Pa]), was fabricated on commercial polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration membranes through an oxygen-plasma assisted contra-diffusion self-assembly strategy for organic-solvent dehydration. The PAN membranes with a glycerol exhibited a better separation factor for dehydration of organic solvents than those without a glycerol layer. The influence of oxygen plasma and glycerol on the formation of the TpPa membrane was investigated. The best plasma treatment condition and optimum glycerol impregnation concentration were determined as a device power of 60 W and 30 wt%, respectively. Defect-free TpPa membrane formation took only 24 h. The as-prepared TpPa membrane exhibited a separation factor of 1491 and a high permeation flux of 2530 g m(-2) h(-1) for a 90 wt% isopropanol-water mixture. The separation performance of the TpPa membrane was stable for >100 h, exhibiting great potential in organic-solvent dehydration.

一种等离子体辅助制备有机框架渗透汽化膜的方法,属于膜制备技术领域。包括以下步骤,使用等离子体对表面含有丙三醇的多孔基底进行处理;随后将基底密封于自制扩散装置的中,将配置好的有机相和水相分别倒入基底两侧;置于室温反应;使用溶剂对复合膜进行冲洗,在鼓风烘箱中干燥得到有机框架复合膜。本发明通过使用等离子体处理基底的方式,缩短了有机框架的制备时间。通过改变有机相中添加醇的种类,调控了COFs在装置中的成膜位置。所述的复合膜可用于有机溶剂中少量水的去除,具有良好的选择渗透性。具有制备工艺简单,能耗低等优势。

溶剂冲洗对界面聚合制备中空纤维聚酰胺纳滤膜的影响

以自制的聚砜(PSf)中空纤维超滤膜为基膜,以哌嗪为水相单体,均苯三甲酰氯为有机相单体,在PSf基膜内表面进行界面聚合反应,制备内压式中空纤维聚酰胺纳滤膜.重点研究了溶剂冲洗过程对界面聚合制备中空纤维聚酰胺纳滤膜的影响.此外,考察了哌嗪浓度、均苯三甲酰氯浓度、反应时间等条件对中空纤维纳滤膜脱盐性能的影响,表征了膜表面形貌和化学性质.在最佳条件下制备的内压式中空纤维纳滤膜的纯水渗透通量为124 L/(m2·h·MPa),截留分子量约为360,对不同无机盐的截留顺序为:Na2SO4(97.71%)>MgSO4(95.08%)>CaCl2(54.44%)>NaCl(16.18%).
