Photonic-Assisted Reconfigurable LO Harmonic Downconverter With RF Self-Interference Cancellation and Image-Rejection SCIE

Abstract :

A photonic-assisted reconfigurable LO harmonic downconverter with simultaneous image-rejection and RF self-interference cancellation (SIC) for in-band full-duplex communication is proposed and experimentally investigated based on a dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-DPMZM). The received signal from the antenna, which includes the radio frequency (RF) signal, image signal (IM) and self-interference (SI) signal, is input into one sub-MZM of the X-DPMZM. The self-reference (SR) signal is input into the other. The Y-DPMZM is used to load the LO signal and is properly biased to obtain the high-order sideband of the LO signal, which was then set as the LO signal of the reconfigurable harmonic frequency downconverter. By matching the power and delay of the SR signal and changing the main bias of the X-DPMZM, the SI signal can be eliminated directly in optical domain. With power splitting after the output of the DP-DPMZM, the quadrature IF signals can be obtained by a photonics-based continuously adjustable phase shifter. Then, photonics image-rejection down-conversion based on phase cancellation is realized after a low-frequency electrical 90 & DEG; hybrid coupler (HC) combines the quadrature IF signals. Both theoretical and experimental investigations are performed. The results show that the SIC has a cancellation depth more than 32 dB for the 10-MHz bandwidth and greater than 19 dB for the 500-MHz bandwidth, the image-rejection has an image-rejection ratio larger than 31 dB for 10-MHz bandwidth and larger than 22 dB for the 100-MHz bandwidth, both in 2(nd)- and 3(rd)-order harmonic down-conversion mode. Experiments are also carried out on the reconfigurable LO harmonic downconverter with simultaneous SIC and image-rejection. A 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) -modulated RF signal is successfully down-converted to a 1-GHz intermediate frequency (IF) signal with self-interference and image frequency cancelled. It is verified that the RF signal can be well recovered from SI and IM signals by the proposed system.

Continuous Terahertz Image-plane Digital Holography Based on TPX Lens

Abstract :

The wavelength of terahertz wave is between those of infrared wave and microwave,with the characteristics of penetration,strong water absorption,and low photon energy,etc. Terahertz imaging has been are widely used in biomedical imaging,anti- terrorism security and non-destructive testing and other fields. The good penetration of terahertz wave is beneficial to detect the internal structure of objects. Phasecontrast imaging can better reflect the internal structure of objects,compared with simple terahertz intensity imaging. Continuous terahertz wave phase-contrast imaging can be divided into point- by- point scanning acquisition method with a single-point detector and full- field recording method with a surface array detector. The former has a low data acquisition rate and cannot image large samples quickly;the latter has a fast data acquisition rate,but also places higher demands on the detector's pixel size and dynamic range. Continuous terahertz wave digital holographic imaging records the hologram by a faceted detector,and then obtains the complex amplitude information of the sample by a reconstruction algorithm. According to different optical path structures,continuous terahertz wave digital holography can be divided into in- line digital holography and off- axis digital holography. In-line digital holography can make full use of the spatial bandwidth product of the detector,but requires a sufficiently high energy ratio of direct and diffracted light after passing through the sample, as well as the problem of twin image interference. Off-axis digital holography introduces a certain angle between the object light and the reference light,which solves the twin image problem and makes the reconstruction process simple.Off-axis image-plane digital holography uses a microscope objective to directly collect the imaging information of the object. Compared with off-axis Fresnel digital holography,this imaging method has fast computation and high resolution,and has been widely applied at visible wavelengths. Besides,this imaging method has been combined with some other high-resolution imaging techniques,resulting in multi- angle illumination digital holography, structured light illumination digital holography etc. However,due to the lack of terahertz devices and the strong absorption of terahertz by polar substances,the terahertz full- field phase-contrast imaging usually requires a compact and simple optical path structure. To the best of my knowledge,no relevant work on terahertz image-plane digital holography has been reported yet. In recent years,various terahertz devices such as lasers,detectors and gratings have been developed rapidly. New terahertz imaging elements such as large numerical aperture terahertz lenses and terahertz solid immersion objectives have emerged, providing strong hardware support for the development of terahertz imaging. In this paper,a continuous terahertz wave image-plane digital holographic imaging method based on TPX lens is proposed. The holographic recording and reproduction process is studied,and the quadratic phase distortion introduced by TPX lens is removed by surface fitting distortion correction. The digital holographic imaging system of terahertz image plane is built. The imaging resolution of the system is quantitatively analyzed by using an amplitude Siemens star sample. Then two phase samples of organic materials and biological samples are imaged. The experiment verifies the effectiveness of the phase contrast imaging method. The introduction of image plane imaging in terahertz band is conducive to improve the resolution and quality of terahertz imaging. It has a wide application prospect in biomedical imaging,nondestructive testing and other fields.

Abstract :

A novel type of photonic background-free multiband arbitrarily phase-coded microwave signal generator with power fading elimination capability is reported. An x-polarized phase modulated optical signal and a y-polarized radio frequency (RF) modulated harmonic single-sideband (HSSB) optical signal are produced based on a dual-polarization quadrature phase shift-keying modulator (DP-QPSKM). After polarization modulation to intensity modulation conversion, a microwave signal with arbitrarily phase encoding in multiple frequency bands is generated. Benefiting from the phase modulation state of the driven electrical coded signal, the generated arbitrarily phase-coded signal has no baseband components. Moreover, the equivalent HSSB modulation ensures the system can realize antidispersion transmission of one-to-multi base stations (BSs). The main distinct highlights of our generator are multifunction. The proposed single-modulator-based photonic scheme can achieve phase encoding in arbitrary format over multiple frequency bands and transmit over long-distance single-mode fiber with the elimination of power fading simultaneously. This work is pretty promising in multiband radar systems for one-to-multi BSs transmission and can increase the detection range, range resolution, Doppler tolerance, and sensitivity of objective recognition of radars.

Single-modulator Based Multi-Format Switchable Signal Generator Without Background Noise SCIE

Abstract :

A photonic multi-format background-free binarily modulated microwave signal generator using a single dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator is proposed and demonstrated. The proposed generator features good reconfiguration and switchability. By simply adjusting the direct current biases of the modulator, amplitude shift keying (ASK), phase shift keying (PSK) and frequency-shift keying (FSK) microwave signals can be generated. Benefiting from the complementary intensity modulation, there is no residual baseband modulated signal in the generated binarily modulated signals. The system does not involve any optical or electrical filters, which ensures good tunability of the generator. By changing the frequency of the driven microwave carrier and bit rate of the electrical coded signal, the frequency and rate of the generated multi-format signals can be adjusted accordingly. The multi-format switchable signal generator has great potential in multi-functional communication and radar systems.

Abstract :

A photonics-assisted frequency conversion and self-interference cancellation approach is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for in-band full-duplex (IBFD) communication. Carrier suppressed single sidebands (CS-SSB) of the intermediate frequency (IF) signal and the local oscillator (LO) signal are simultaneously obtained through the X-DPMZM in a dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder (DP-DPMZM) modulator. A transmit signal with high purity is produced, and a shared LO optical sideband is also provided for the subsequent downconversion. The carrier suppressed double sideband (CS-DSB) modulation for the signal of interest (SOI) is achieved via the Y-DPMZM. The self-interference signal is suppressed by adjusting the bias voltage of its main MZM. An optical bandpass filter (OBPF) is combined to realize frequency downconversion. The experimental results show that the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR3) is 102.6 dB/Hz(2/3) for frequency upconversion, a cancellation depth of more than 50 dB for single-frequency self-interference cancellation (SIC), and more than 22 dB for wideband SIC. The proposed link has superiority in multifunctionality, including in-band transmission, reception, and self-interference cancellation, with a shared LO.

Filter-Free Photonic Image-Rejection Down-Conversion for Distributed Antenna Applications EI

Abstract :

Photonics-Assisted frequency conversion based on cascaded modulators is an effective way to satisfy the requirements of distributed antenna array applications. A filter-free photonic image-rejection down-converter with immunity to dispersion-induced power fading is proposed and demonstrated. The radio frequency (RF) signal from the distributed antenna unit is injected into a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM) through an electrical 90° hybrid coupler (HC), and a single-sideband (SSB) signal is realized. It is then transmitted to the center office by an optical fiber link. At the center office, the modulated RF signal is injected into a dual-polarization dual-parallel MZM (DP-DPMZM) after a polarization controller (PC). Afterwards, an LO signal remodulates it through the Y-DPMZM, and carrier-suppressed SSB modulation is fulfilled via another electrical 90° HC. After the power splitting, quadrature I and Q IF signals can be obtained by a photonics-based continuously adjustable phase shifter. Through a combination of the I/Q IF signals with a low-frequency electrical 90° HC, a photonics image-rejection down-converter based on phase cancellation is realized. Moreover, no optical filter is required; thus, the image-rejection down-converter can work with a large bandwidth. The proposed filter-free photonic image-rejection down-converter is theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified. © 2009-2012 IEEE.

By virtue of its versatile recording geometries, ptychography is a promising full-field lensless phase imaging approach in the prosperous research area of terahertz imaging. In this paper, we propose an extrapolation extended ptychographical iterative engine, named as the EE-PIE reconstruction algorithm, to increase the lateral resolution of terahertz ptychography. A divergent spherical beam is applied to illuminate the object, while diffraction patterns are recorded in the Fresnel region. The signal-to-noise ratio of the diffraction patterns is enhanced under divergent probe illumination, while the size of the diffraction patterns is numerically enlarged by the proposed algorithm. Both the reconstruction quality and the resolution are enhanced without adding to the complexity of the setup or increasing the data acquisition time. The proposed method is experimentally demonstrated using a cluster of phylloclades, a patterned polypropylene plate and a Siemens star target. Compared with the planar illumination, the resolution of the divergent spherical illumination is improved by 2.14 times. On this basis, the extrapolation algorithm further improves the experimental resolution by 1.26 times.

Abstract :

A broadband photonic microwave signal processor based on integrated dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-DPMZM) is proposed. The processor has a tunable local oscillator (LO) signal, which is generated by the optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) loop in one of the sub-DPMZM with high spectral purity and low phase noise, and its center frequency can be tuned by electronic band-pass filter (EBPF). Using the bias voltage of DP-DPMZM and fiber Bragg grating, the carrier-suppressed single-sideband (CS-SSB) modulation of LO and RF signals can be realized, and the up or down conversion of frequency converter can be realized by adjusting the single bias voltage of DP-DPMZM. Moreover, the power fading caused by dispersion is well compensated with the SSB modulation. The experimental results show that the tunable LO signal of 6-20 GHz is successfully generated, the side mode rejection ratio is as high as 48.4 dB, and the 10 kHz phase noise is 107.6 dBc/Hz at 8 GHz. The spurious rejection ratio of up-down conversion signal is 31.4 dB and 33.6 dB, respectively. © 2021 SPIE

Abstract :

光学拍频是大学物理和光学实验教学中的重要内容.由于激光器存在中心波长漂移问题,实验中不易产生可观测的拍频信号.受到微波光子技术中微波波段和光波波段相互作用机理的启发,提出了基于微波频差转换的光学拍频方法.借助强度调制和相位调制将两个频差较小的微波信号调制到同一光载波上,结合光学滤波器获得了两个频差极小的稳定光信号,利用光电探测器实现光学拍频,从仿真和实验两个层面分别获得了可视化的低频拍频信号.该研究为大学物理和光学实验提供了与科学前沿相结合的实验方案,可拓展教学内容和教学深度,有利于培养学生的科学素养.
