Effect of ultrasonic-assisted laser metal deposition on microcracks in deposition layer SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 , 181 | OPTICS AND LASER TECHNOLOGY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

In order to study the effect of non-contact ultrasonic-assisted laser metal deposition (LMD) on microcracks, Febased powders were deposited on a 42CrMoA steel using LMD process at different excitation distances (d). The results show that the maximum length of microcracks is 112.3 mu m under the condition without ultrasonicassisted. When d = 50 mm, a crack of less than 10 mu m is generated at the bottom of deposition layer. When d = 110 mm, the microcrack maximum length is 84.4 mu m. The deposition layer with no microcracks was obtained when d = 80 mm. Ultrasonic-assisted application can synergically inhibit the generation of cracks from two aspects. On the one hand, it makes the distribution of B element more uniform in the molten pool, and the accumulation of borides at the bottom of the deposition layer easily generates hard and brittle borides such as M23(C,B)6, which is more likely to induce cracks. After non-contact ultrasonic-assisted, the width of boride is 54.2 % lower than that without ultrasonic-assisted, and the boride morphology is slightly different. The borides changed from long rod-shape and mesh-shape to nanoscale short rod-shape and granular-shape. On the other hand, it can make the microscopic stress distribution at the bottom of deposition layer more uniform, which reduces the crack sensitivity. Compared to the condition without ultrasonic-assisted, when d is 50 mm, 80 mm and 110 mm, the KAM average value decreased by 44.03 %, 40.36 % and 19.27 %, respectively.

Welding of additive manufacturing AlSi10Mg alloys using a laser metal deposition process with different heat inputs SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Welding of AlSi10Mg alloys fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) has been recently conducted to meet the demands for joining or repairing them. However, high susceptibility to porosity occurring in weld metal (WM) poses a significant challenge for fusion welding of AM AlSi10Mg alloys. The laser metal deposition (LMD) process has emerged as a promising welding solution due to its low dilution rate for reducing the porosity. In this study, LMD welding of AM AlSi10Mg alloys was carried out employing different heat inputs with five and eight tracks. The study systematically assessed the impact of heat input on porosity, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the welded joints. The results show that the decrease of heat input from 180 to 75 J/mm results in a substantial reduction in porosity from 7.0 to 2.1%. This reduction leads to a 29.4% increase in ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and an 11.7% increase in elongation index (EI). Furthermore, the upper region of joints with eight tracks possessing low heat input displays lower porosity and superior mechanical properties than the bottom region with relatively high heat input. The WM with eight tracks exhibits refined alpha-Al cells and Si-rich eutectic phases, improved connectivity of Si-rich networks, and increased solid solution strengthening, compared to the five-track joints with higher heat input. As a result, low heat input of the upper region in the LMD welded joints has been effective in minimizing hydrogen pores, enhancing WM microstructure, and improving the mechanical properties of welded joints in AM AlSi10Mg alloys.

Dissimilar Joining of TC4 Alloys to 304 Stainless Steels Using a Novel V/CuCrZr Composite Interlayer SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Laser metal deposition of pure vanadium (V) powder was conducted on TC4 alloys base material to produce an in situ V/Cu composite interlayer for dissimilar welding of 304 stainless steels to TC4 alloys. A sound TC4/304 SS joint is obtained using the prepared V/Cu composite interlayers. The microstructure, microhardness, and tensile properties of the TC4/304 SS joints were investigated. (beta-Ti, V), (V), and (Cu) solid solutions are found in the fusion zone near the TC4 alloy side, and (Cu) and (gamma-Fe) solid solutions are observed in the fusion zone near the 304 SS side. The maximum ultimate tensile strength of 421 MPa and an elongation at fracture of 4.5% are obtained in the TC4/304 SS joints among the three tensile specimens. The fracture of the welded joints occurs in the heat-affected zone of the unmelted CuCrZr zone instead of the fusion zones due to the coarsening grains. The "bite" connection between FZ1 and CuCrZr plays an important role in improving the tensile strength of the welded joint.

Effect of Er and Zr addition on laser weldability of AlSi10Mg alloys fabricated by selective laser melting SCIE

Abstract :

The additive manufactured (AM) parts of aluminum alloys have been widely used in defense, aerospace, automotive and other industries. There is a growing demand for joining or repairing of the AM parts of aluminum alloys using welding technology. However, the problems of high porosity and joint softening are occurred when welding of aluminum alloy AM parts, which have become technical bottlenecks that need to be solved urgently. Laser welding of AlSi10Mg alloys fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) with an addition of Er and Zr in the filler metal was carried out. The effect of Er and Zr addition on the porosity, microstructures and mechanical properties of the welded joints was investigated, and the contribute of Er and Zr addition to the yield strength (YS) of the welded joints was calculated. Compared that joints without Er and Zr addition, the average ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and YS of the welded joints with Er and Zr addition have been increased by 10.5% and 23.5%, respectively. The improved mechanical poverty of the welded joints is due to the refined alpha-Al grains and Si-rich cellular networks, and the reduced hydrogen pores occurred in the weld metal (WM) with the addition of Er and Zr. The YS calculation of the weld joints indicates the most important contribution to the YS is the enhancement effect of the Si-rich networks with Er and Zr.

Abstract :

The welding process has been recently introduced to join of the materials fabricated by powder bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing (AM) to meet the requirement for the large parts and their repair in service. However, one of the main issues is the high susceptibility to the hydrogen pores occurred during fusion welding of the PBF aluminum (Al) alloys. Autogenous laser welding of a selective laser melting (SLM) AlSi10Mg alloy was firstly carried out in comparison with the casting AlSi10Mg alloy to examine the hydrogen pore characteristics. Singlepass welding with filler powders and laser melting deposition (LMD) welding were then performed on SLM AlSi10Mg alloys to reduce the hydrogen pores. The porosity, microstructure, microhardness and tensile property of the welded joints were investigated. As a result, a high susceptibility to hydrogen pores of SLM AlSi10Mg alloys is occurred in the weld metal (WM) of the welded joint produced by autogenous laser welding and singlepass laser welding due to the high hydrogen content pre-existing in the base metal (BM). However, LMD welding has been shown to effectively reduce the pore size and the porosity generated in the WM of SLM AlSi10Mg alloys. The laser welding of SLM AlSi10Mg alloys produces lower hardness and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) than that of the BM. However, the LMD welding of SLM AlSi10Mg alloys achieves higher hardness and UTS than those of the autogenous laser welding and single-pass laser welding, which is attributed to the refined microstructures and the reduced hydrogen pores in the WM.
