Bearing Characteristics and Ground Deformation Computation of Recyclable Steel-Pipe Piles during Pit Excavation SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 , 14 (13) | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

In the context of increasing environmental awareness and the demand for sustainable construction practices, the use of recyclable materials in civil engineering projects has gained significant attention. This study focuses on the bearing characteristics and deformation behavior of recyclable steel-pipe piles during the excavation of foundation pits. Field experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to comprehensively analyze the stress characteristics and surface settlement patterns behind the piles. The results reveal critical insights into the interaction between the steel-pipe piles and the surrounding soil, providing a detailed understanding of the stress distribution and deformation mechanisms. An empirical method for calculating the surface settlement value, induced by foundation pit excavation under the support of steel-pipe slope protection piles, has been proposed. This method improves the accuracy of settlement predictions and enhances the reliability of foundation pit design.

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Evaluating groundwater inflow is greatly significant for ensuring the safety and economy during foundation pit dewatering with suspended waterproof curtains. However, there are limited applicable methods to predict the groundwater inflow of circle foundation pit with waterproof curtains in deep unconfined aquifers. In this study, based on Darcy's law and the continuity of water flow, the impact of suspended waterproof curtains on groundwater seepage was initially analyzed during circle foundation pit dewatering in deep unconfined aquifers. Furthermore, an analytical solution was proposed for groundwater inflow of circle foundation pit with suspended waterproof curtains in the unconfined aquifers. The effect of suspended waterproof curtains on seepage area, seepage direction, and seepage path were respectively considered by introducing the buried depth of waterproof curtain, the anisotropy coefficient, and the seepage path reduction coefficient. Finally, based on the self-conducted indoor seepage experiment and other cases (an indoor seepage experiment and two actual engineering projects), this proposed method was applied to conduct a comparative analysis with the existing methods. Results indicated that the proposed method can more reasonably evaluate the groundwater inflow of circle foundation pit with waterproof curtains in the unconfined aquifer, which can provide a better guidance for the groundwater inflow control in the practical dewatering projects.

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Underground engineering construction will inevitably change the stress state of surrounding strata, which will force a negative impact on the surrounding environment, even leading to the large deformation and damage of some adjacent structures. With a focus on the deformation of a typical soil-rock composite stratum site in the construction of Changchun Metro, relying on the shield construction of a parallel twin tunnel project between Northeast Normal University Station and Gong-Nong Square Station, which belongs to the Changchun Metro Line 1, the site deformation characteristics during the shield driving process of parallel twin tunnels were studied. Based on the data obtained from field monitoring and numerical simulation, ground settlement in shield driving was analyzed, the settlement trough was studied with the Peck formula, and the action of shield driving on the adjacent tunnel was discussed. Moreover, the influence range of shield driving was suggested, and the interaction between the twin tunnels with different axis spacings in shield driving was discussed. Some regular results obtained can provide support through data for similar projects in Changchun, China.

Soil Deformation Investigation of a Piled-Raft Foundation Pit Under-Crossed by a Super-Large Diameter Shield Tunnel SCIE

Abstract :

In recent years, there has been a rise in the construction of expansive underground structures and shield tunnels with exceptionally large diameters. These projects introduce unique challenges regarding their impact on the surrounding soil and structures, which differ from those typically encountered in conventional shield tunnels. However, the existing body of research in this specific domain remains insufficient. When such tunnels intersect deep foundation pits supported by piled-raft foundations, the discrepancies in soil deformation can become even more pronounced. At present, there is a dearth of research on the underlying principles governing these differences, and theoretical investigations have not kept pace with practical engineering applications. Consequently, the existing settlement prediction methods employed for diverse projects need to be reevaluated and adjusted to accommodate the distinctive characteristics of each individual project. Regarding the engineering focus of this paper, it is crucial to recognize that soil subsidence in the pit bottom has a significant influence on the mechanical response of the piles. Consequently, the implementation of targeted correction measures remains consistently important. Based on this concept, this paper focuses on a super-large diameter shield tunnel project that under-crossed a deep foundation pit with a piled-raft foundation. The influence of different construction methods on the settlement law of the soil at the bottom of the deep foundation pit is discussed after verification of the accuracy of the model through numerical simulation and field monitoring data. Additionally, two correction coefficients that consider the project's load characteristics are proposed in this research. These coefficients were used to correct the surface settlement curve. The corrected soil settlement curve at the pit's bottom can successfully reflect the numerical simulation results, which in turn can reflect the mechanical response of the pile under the influence of tunnel excavation.

Seismic Response of Utility Tunnels with Different Burial Depths at the Non-Homogeneous Liquefiable Site SCIE

Abstract :

Damage to underground structures induced by soil liquefaction under cyclic loads such as earthquakes has long been an important issue in underground engineering practice. In this paper, five models are developed using Flac3D software to analyze the effect of burial depth on the force, deformation characteristics, and uplift behavior of utility tunnels in the non-homogeneous site containing a liquefied layer. The cyclic shear property of saturated sand and the increase in pore water pressure during the earthquake are modeled using a cyclic load-volume strain increment model, using Shell-Type structural elements to model underground utility tunnels, and by using plastic hinges to represent the bending moment capacity of member's joints. Numerical results show that for shallow-buried utility tunnels, increasing the burial depth increases the bending moment, shear force, and deformation of the structure while significantly reducing its uplift. Therefore, for high-strength shallow-buried utility tunnels, appropriate increase in burial depth can improve its seismic safety.

A massive ancient river-damming landslide triggered by buckling failure in the upper Jinsha River, SE Tibetan Plateau SCIE

Abstract :

Large-scale landsliding is an extremely important geological process in shaping landscapes in the Tibetan Plateau. In this research, an ancient river-damming landslide with an estimated debris volume of 4.9 x 10(7) m(3), located in the upper Jinsha River, SE Tibetan Plateau, was studied. The landslide once formed a dam over 60 m high and blocked the river. Lacustrine sediments, composed of silty clay with particle sizes of 0.002-0.25 mm, are intermittently distributed along both banks, extending about 6.5 km upstream. The OSL dating indicates that the lacustrine sediments have an age of 2.6 +/- 0.2 ka. Detailed field investigation and theoretical analysis was performed to investigate the characteristics, potential cause and mechanism of the landslide. The results suggest that the landslide was most likely triggered by buckling of planar rock slabs under gravity. It may start as a translational sliding along the weak interlayer composed of mica schist at the upper part of the slope and then formed buckles by curving amphibolite rock beds near the slope toe. The hillslope has still been affected by gravitational deformations, with geomorphology characterized by tension cracks, buckle folds, and small landslide scars distributed on the slope surface, suggesting that the evolution of the river valley caused by buckling deformation has not achieved equilibrium.

Deformation Responses and Mechanical Mechanism of Existing Tunnel due to New Building Construction SCIE

Abstract :

This study mainly investigated the variation law and mechanical mechanism of surrounding earth pressure and deformation of an existing tunnel, caused by dewatering, foundation excavation, building loading, and groundwater recovery. According to different dewatering schemes, two modes were established: nonisolated dewatering unloading-loading mode and isolated dewatering unloading-loading mode. Through large-scale similar materials model test, the variation law of deformation and surrounding earth pressure of adjacent tunnel under complex unloading-loading conditions was preliminarily revealed. Based on the size of the prototype project, the test results were further verified by the numerical simulation. The mechanical mechanism of tunnel deformation in different construction stages was analyzed after the comparative study. The results show that the tunnel structure deformation, vertical and horizontal displacement, and torsion occur in the process of building construction. In the nonisolated dewatering unloading-loading mode, the decrease or rise of the groundwater level significantly reduces (maximum 27.85%) or increases (maximum 35.19%) the surrounding earth pressure of the tunnel. The decrease or increase of the horizontal total stress was much greater than that of the vertical total stress, which leads to the deformation of tunnel structure. The vertical displacement of the tunnel is generally settlement, which mainly occurs in the stage of dewatering and building loading, accounting for 83.21%100.00% and 25.11%-40.34% of the total settlement, respectively. In the stage of foundation pit excavation and groundwater recovery, the tunnel rises. In the horizontal direction, the tunnel moves towards the foundation pit, mainly in the excavation stage, accounting for 82.77%-86.30% of the maximum value. Due to the uneven change of displacement field and stress field of soil outside the foundation pit, the tunnel torsion occurs. In the isolated dewatering unloading-Loading mode, the change of groundwater has little effect on the tunnel. In the stage of excavation and construction load, the variation law of tunnel surrounding earth pressure and deformation is similar in the two modes.

Research on Search Method of Potential Sliding Surface of Rock Slope with Embedded Structural Plane SCIE

Abstract :

Slope stability has been a key issue in the field of geotechnical engineering. Determining the potential sliding surface of a slope is an important link in evaluating the stability of the slope. For rock slope with embedded structural plane, the potential sliding surface is greatly affected by the embedded structural plane. When determining the potential sliding surface, the influence of the position of the embedded structural plane should be considered. According to the distribution characteristics of the embedded structural plane of the rock slope, the structural plane in rock slope is divided into two types: (1) front embedded and (2) rear embedded structural plane. Considering the influence of two types of structural planes, a search method for potential sliding surfaces of rock slope is proposed combined with the finite random tracking method. The location of the sliding surface is controlled through the cut-in point, cut-out point, and arc height so that the range of search variables does not need empirical assumption. An engineering example is used to verify the search method. The results show that the method could accurately obtain the potential sliding surface of the rock slope with embedded structural plane, which proves the effectiveness of the search method.
