Inherent and multiple strain hardening imparting synergistic ultrahigh strength and ductility in a low stacking faulted heterogeneous high-entropy alloy SCIE

Abstract :

Alloys with high yield strength and ductility are attractive for application because of their potential to offer mass reduction, energy savings, and enhanced structural reliability. However, increasing strength usually comes at the expense of ductility, which is commonly known as the strength-ductility trade-off for metal alloys. In this work, we explored a strategy of using a heterogeneous grain size structure and a reduced stacking fault energy in a CoCrFeNiMn FCC high entropy alloy to overcome the limitations of this trade-off. By this approach, the alloy achieved a yield strength of 980 MPa, a tensile strength of 1385 MPa, and tensile elongation to failure of 48% benefiting from cooperative strain hardening via multiple mech-anisms, such as hetero-deformation induced (HDI) hardening, deformation twinning, Frank-Read disloca-tion sources and Lomer-Cottrell dislocation locks instigated by such structures. These micromechanisms of deformation help to harden the alloy via in situ refinement of the mean free paths for dislocations.(c) 2022 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The effects of solutes like ruthenium on precipitation of Sigma phase and Sigma/gamma interface stability in Ni-based superalloys SCIE

Abstract :

sigma and mu phases are two of the most common topological close-packed (TCP) phases in nickel-based single crystal superalloys, which are detrimental to the comprehensive properties of superalloys. It is universally acknowl-edged that Ru plays an important role in the precipitation of TCP, and its inhibiting effects on the nucleation and precipitation of mu phases have already been confirmed, but its effects on sigma phases remain vague. In this work, the types and area fractions of the TCP phases precipitated from 4 alloys with different compositions have been characterized. It is found that Ru has different effects on the precipitation of different types of TCP. With the help of density functional theory (DFT), the interface structures between sigma and matrix gamma are further studied, and on this basis, the effects of different solutes such as Ru on interface stability and electronic structure are discussed in detail. Ru, Re, W, Cr and Ta are able to enhance the interface stability, boosting the nucleation of sigma phase. Co is different, for it can reduce the interface stability and elevate the nucleation difficulty of sigma. Additionally, the distribution behaviors of solutes between sigma and gamma phases have been calculated, from which it can be found that the energies of solutes like Cr and Ru distributing in sigma are more stable than distributing inside gamma, and these solutes have the tendency to diffuse from gamma to sigma. These results reveal the effects of solutes like Ru on the precipitation of sigma phase in terms of interfacial stability and atomic diffusion, which provide a new understanding of Ru effects.

镍基单晶高温合金中小角晶界失效机制的原位研究

现阶段制备出的镍基单晶高温合金中常常难以避免平行于加载方向的小角晶界存在,开展小角晶界失效机制的研究对于综合评价镍基单晶合金的服役性能具有重要指导作用.本文通过双籽晶法制备出含有小角晶界的双晶高温合金,采用透射电镜中的原位技术,开展小角晶界对镍基单晶高温合金失效机制的研究.研究发现,改变籽晶的排布方式可以制备出晶界近似平行(010)和(11-0)晶面的两类双晶;当沿(010)晶面的晶界进行拉伸时,两侧晶粒分别发生了沿滑移面的解理断裂及横截面的脆性断裂;而沿(11-0)晶面的晶界进行拉伸时,两侧晶粒仅发生沿滑移面的解理断裂.上述现象主要由合金内取向因子的差异所导致.

高熵合金跨尺度异构强韧化及其力学性能研究进展

Abstract :

高熵合金突破了传统合金设计理念的桎梏,具有高强度、高硬度、高耐磨性及抗腐蚀性,是一种具有巨大发展前景的新型金属材料.然而,金属材料的强度与塑性之间存在倒置矛盾关系,高熵合金仍受困于这一难题.因此,设计开发兼具高强度与高塑性的高熵合金材料已成为目前研究热点与难点.近年来,异构设计理念在传统金属材料强韧化这一问题上得到发展,如何设计异构高熵合金以实现高熵合金强韧化,使合金兼具高强度与高塑性,引起了科研人员的重视.本文从异构显微组织尺度出发,综述了目前存在的异构显微结构设计方法,分析了不同异构组织对其强韧化机制及力学性能的影响,并对未来高强韧高熵合金显微结构设计进行了展望.

Dynamic mechanisms of strengthening and softening of coherent twin boundary via dislocation pile-up and cross-slip SCIE

Abstract :

Although cross-slip strongly affects the deformation of polycrystalline materials, the phenomenon is rarely studied in twinned face centered cubic (FCC) metals. Here we performed in-situ TEM nanoindentation on a twinned nickel bi-crystal. Multiple pile-ups were generated, with the first dislocations pinned at a coherent twin boundary (CTB) and multiple following dislocations cross-slipping within the matrix. Stress calculation revealed that the cross-slip events are made possible by the CTB, the first dislocations, and the favorable shear stress created jointly by external stress and dislocation interaction. These cross-slip events reduce tip stress and soften the material until inter-grain plasticity is eventually activated. IMPACT STATEMENT In-situ TEM nanoindentation reveals the characteristics of dislocation pinning, pile-ups and cross-slip along the twinning boundary in a twinned FCC metal for the first time.

γ′相是镍基单晶高温合金中主要强化相,研究γ′相的热稳定性对于优化合金的高温服役性能具有重要指导作用.本文采用扫描电镜和透射电镜,研究了长期时效过程中镍基单晶高温合金中γ′相的粗化行为.研究发现在长期时效过程中γ′相的尺寸逐渐增加,γ′相的尺寸由初始的方块状演变为长条状.结合定量化分析,发现γ′相尺寸的粗化速率逐渐降低、γ′相体积分数先降后增.γ′相尺寸在时效初始阶段遵循Ostwald熟化规律,粗化到一定程度会发生γ′相合并,合并后便不再按Ostwald熟化规律增加.γ′相尺寸体积分数变化规律是由外界温度升高及时间延长所引起的先回溶后脱溶所导致.

Abstract :

High-entropy alloys overcome the limitations posed by traditional alloys due to features such as high strength, toughness, high wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. These alloys are novel metallic materials with excellent application potential; however, typically an inverse relationship is observed between the strength and ductility of a metal, which includes high-entropy alloys. Therefore, the design and development of high entropy alloys with high strength and high ductility have become a limitation in current research. Recently, heterostructure design has achieved great success in strengthening and toughening traditional metallic materials. Heterostructured and high-entropy alloys has garnered much attention and research interest to realize the strength and toughness of high-entropy alloys with high strength and high ductility. This study reviews the existing design models for heterostructures from the heterostructure scale perspective. Furthermore, the effects of different heterostructures on the strengthening and toughening mechanism and mechanical properties were analyzed, and future microstructural designs with high strength and toughness were anticipated.

Entropy Engineered Cubic n-Type AgBiSe2 Alloy with High Thermoelectric Performance in Fully Extended Operating Temperature Range EI

Abstract :

Developing high performance n-type thermoelectric (TE) materials is fundamentally important for developing high efficiency TE devices. AgBiSe2, which reveals superior n-type TE performance in a cubic phase, crystallizes in a hexagonal phase at room temperature, and typically, undergoes phase transitions to a cubic phase at a temperature above 580 K. Here, for the first time, through entropy optimization with lead-selenides (≥9.9 mol%), the high-temperature cubic phase of AgBiSe2 is stabilized from 300 to 800 K. Furthermore, the AgBiSe2-PbSe pseudo-binary diagram is established. The resultant alloys with optimized entropy possess unique local distorted cubic lattices, which contribute low lattice thermal conductivity approaching 0.3 W m−1 K−1 in extended operating temperature range. Consequently, a peak figure of merit zT value of ≈0.8 at 800 K and a record-high average zT value of 0.42 for n-type I-V-VI2 compounds are attained in pure phase cubic n-type (AgBiSe2)1−x(PbSe)x solid solutions. These results pave the way for developing new TE materials via entropy engineering. © 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH

Oxygen changes crack modes of Ni-based single crystal superalloy SCIE

Abstract :

Oxygen-affected cracking commonly presents on thin Ni-based single crystal superalloy components serving in high temperature and oxidizing environments. This study uses a newly developed in-situ thermal-stress environmental transmission electron microscope to investigate the oxidation and fracture behaviors of Ni-based single crystal superalloy at 650 degrees C under stress. The in-situ oxidation was found to change the tensile fracture mode from the close-packed {111} planes of plastic fracture to {001} planes adjacent to gamma/gamma ' interfaces of brittle fracture. The microanalysis also revealed that the gamma ' cuboids, gamma phase, and gamma/gamma interface exhibit different oxidation behavior, thus underscoring the thickness debit effect. [GRAPHICS] .
