Abstract :
Strain-compensated quantum wells (QWs) could greatly improve the performance of semiconductor disk lasers, such as improving the epitaxy quality of the semiconductor gain chip and obtaining a higher gain. To optimize the output characteristics of the semiconductor gain chip, the strain-compensated thickness, well depth, band energy, emission wavelength, and peak gain versus In and P compositions are investigated in detail. The results show that increasing the P composition of the strain-compensated layer will slightly reduce the emission wavelength, deepen the well depth, and increase the peak gain. But the P composition is not the higher the better. When designing a gain chip, it should have a pre-offset between the emission wavelength of the QWs at room temperature and the target wavelength of the laser at an intense pump, and the pre-offset values of the wavelength should be designed deliberately to guarantee the resonant periodic gain structure working normally when the temperature in the active region approaches the desired value. This theoretical investigation may provide guidance for optimizing the laser performance of semiconductor disk lasers and other QW lasers.

Abstract :
We demonstrated a repetition-rate-tunable second harmonic mode-locked optically pumped semiconductor disk laser (OP-SDL), and the tuning range was from 1.168 GHz to 1.25 GHz. The entire tuning process was continuous, and OP-SDL was always in a mode-locked working state. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to obtain intracavity repetition rate tunable second harmonic laser in an OP-SDL. At same time, the repetition rate of fundamental wave can be continuously adjusted from 1.16 GHz to 1.66 GHz. The central wavelengths of the pulse trains were around 971 nm, and the highest repetition rate signal-to-noise ratio was more than 60 dB, indicating that the mode-locked pulses were stable.

Abstract :
Single pulse energy and pulse width can be theoretically increased indefinitely without pulse-breaking in a dissipative soliton resonance pulse (DSR) generated from a mode-locked fiber laser when the peak power is keeping in a certain value. But in some applications, both high pulse energy and high peak power are needed in one single pulse. To improve the peak power of the DSR pulse, the characteristics of DSR pulses were investigated and found that the position of the gain fiber is a factor to influence the peak power and the pulse width. Here, we demonstrate a thulium-doped mode-locked fiber laser operating in the DSR regime with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). When changing the position of the gain fiber, the peak power of DSR pulse could be improved from 0.38 W to 1.42 W with the same pump power. This approach provides a method for increasing the pulse energy and efficiency in mode locked fiber lasers, which may meet some special application.

Abstract :
We present a dispersion-managed mode-locked ytterbium fibre laser based on the nonlinear polarization evolution technique. Four single-pulse states could be generated by changing group delay dispersion values from anomalous (-0.0038 ps(2)) to normal (0.051 ps(2)) with a grating pair. In the normal dispersion regime, the pulse width was gradually decreased with the decrease of the net dispersion. In the anomalous dispersion region, the typical soliton was obtained, which time-bandwidth product could be calculated as 0.526. In addition, the dynamics of four states were also investigated by using the dispersive Fourier transformation technique. Different pulse evolution dynamics were observed from chaotic state to mode-locking.

Abstract :
The dynamics of a common optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is demonstrated for the first time with dispersive Fourier transform (DFT) technique. The singly resonant MgO:PPLN-based optical parametric oscillator is synchronously pumped with an Yb-doped fiber amplifier, and delivers a femtosecond signal wave with a spectrum tuned from 1284 to 1517 nm. Then a DFT device is built and the birth and extinction dynamics of the single- and dual-wavelength signal wave of the OPO is recorded. Compared with conventional mode-locked lasers, the dynamics evolution of the OPO is entirely attributed to the nonlinear effects in the nonlinear crystal different from the atomic transitions in the active media, which gives rise to novel features in the starting progress of the OPO. Furthermore, a new way of energy transfer is discovered for the first time during the evolution of dualwavelength signal wave. The results are believed to provide a unique insight into evolution in OPOs and are instructive for in-depth understanding of OPO and other nonlinear devices and materials.

Abstract :
An advanced light source at blue-green waveband is the key to improve the link-distance and communication performance of an underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system. This work presents the underwater channel characteristics and UWOC system using a blue semiconductor disk laser that passively mode-locked by a semiconductor saturable absorb mirror for the first time. The attenuation coefficients of the continuous-wave and mode-locked lasers under different concentrations of Maalox solution are studied, and the results indicate that the attenuation coefficients of the mode-locked laser are obviously lower than that of the continuous-wave laser. Then an UWOC system based on an acousto-optic modulator are constructed, and the water tank communication experiments are carried out by using quasi-cyclic low-density-parity-check coding and 64-pulse-position-modulation. Experimental results show that the bit error rates of the mode-locked laser are significantly lower than that of continuous-wave laser under the same Maalox solution concentration and same signal-noise-ratio. These results provide an attractive light source for practical long-distance UWOC.

Abstract :
Self-mode-locking (SML) of fundamental TEM00 mode and high-order transverse mode were demonstrated in an optically pumped semiconductor disk laser and these states can be switched by simply adjusting the elements of the laser. The repetition rate of the pulse train was 1 GHz, using a straight cavity. Furthermore, we measured the pulse durations and found that the pulse duration of SML pulse with higher-order transverse mode is shorter than that of fundamental mode at the same pump power. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experiment to obtain two SML states in a single laser. By using the method of changing the cavity length and adjusting the angle of the output coupler, the repetition rate can be continuously tuned from 3 GHz to 3.2 GHz.

Abstract :
We demonstrated a harmonic mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber laser based on a saturable absorber (SA) of 2H-MoTe2, which is a member of the transition metal dichalcogenides. The SA mode-locker was made by integrating the 2H-MoTe2 into a D-shaped fiber, and then was inserted into an erbium-doped fiber laser for mode-locking. The nonlinear modulation depth and saturation power of 2H-MoTe2-based SA were 10.9% and 19 MW cm(-2), respectively. The fundamentally mode-locked pulse train had a pulse width of 577 fs and a repetition rate of 14.32 MHz. The highest order of harmonic mode locking was 55th, which had the repetition rate of 787.6 MHz, pulse width of 820 fs and average output power of 11.8 mW. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest operating repetition frequency that has ever been demonstrated in a 2H-MoTe2-based fiber laser. The experimental results validate the feasibility of 2H-MoTe2 as a promising SA for generating ultrashort pulses with high repetition rates.

Abstract :
We demonstrated two different types of bound noise-like pulses (NLPs) in ytterbium-doped mode-locked fiber lasers using the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. In the anomalous dispersion area, there were multiple spikes in the intensity autocorrelation (IAC) trace. In the normal dispersion area, the spike presented only in the center the of IAC trace. The results of the experiment show that the bound state NLPs may have partial coherence.

Abstract :
In order to obtain higher output power and better beam quality in semiconductor disk lasers, the characteristics of the gain chip and the parameters of laser cavity are investigated theoretically and experimentally in this paper. A 1085 nm semiconductor disk laser with an output power of 2 W is demonstrated, and the M2 factor is about 1.1, which means the beam quality is good. Optimization based on wafer design, pumping method and thermal management is carried out, and the corresponding output performances are discussed. The temperatures of the active regions and the output powers of lasers with front-pumping and end-pumping schemes are compared. The results show that the front-pumped laser could tolerate bigger pump power and obtain higher output power owing to its better heat dissipation, while the end-pumped laser has smaller pump threshold and higher slope efficiency due to its better mode-matching between the pump spot and the laser spot. This investigation may provide a general guidance for better laser performance of a semiconductor disk laser.
