Water hydraulic actuator for bionic fish pectoral fin: Optimization and implementation SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 387 | SENSORS AND ACTUATORS A-PHYSICAL
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The utilization of soft actuators in robotics is progressively expanding, particularly for intricate tasks like grasping and exploration in complex environments. However, conventional rigid actuators driven by motors often prove unsuitable for underwater applications due to their intricate structure. This paper introduces a novel underwater twisting water hydraulic artificial muscle (TWHAM) specifically designed for biomimetic flexible robotic fish, such as pectoral fins. A mathematical model for TWHAM is developed using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), and the parameters are optimized through Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO). Experimental results demonstrate that TWHAM can achieve an impressive torsion angle of 49.5 degrees and generate a substantial torque of 0.848 N & sdot;m under a pressure of 1.0 MPa. The incorporation of bionic pectoral fins enables the robotic fish to achieve precise steering with a radius of 0.65 m at a speed of 0.32 m/s. These findings highlight the significant potential application of water hydraulics in areas such as environmental protection, water quality testing, and ocean exploration.

Reducing flow ripple of integrated energy recovery-pressure boost device: optimization of port plate and experimental validation SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Pressure and flow ripples in integrated energy recovery-pressure boost devices (IERPBD) for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) systems induce detrimental vibrations, noise, and accelerated degradation of critical components (e.g., reverse osmosis membranes and valves). To address this challenge, this study proposes a comprehensive optimization framework combining numerical modeling, structural redesign, and experimental validation. A lumped parameter model of the axial piston booster pump (APBP) in IERPBD was developed, incorporating Monte Carlo-based flow area calculation and simulated annealing (SA) algorithm-driven optimization of port plate geometry. A novel 2 pressures/2 systems (2P2S) method was implemented to dynamically characterize flow ripples, achieving high measurement accuracy and validating the model's fidelity across rotational speeds. Besides, an optimized port plate was manufactured based on optimization results. Experimental results revealed a 14.8 % reduction in pressure ripple and 11.2 % reduction in flow ripple with the optimized port plate, demonstrating the efficacy of the SA algorithm in mitigating hydraulic pulsations. Furthermore, the study quantifies the diminishing optimization efficacy at higher rotational speeds, linking it to increased leakage dynamics and system resonance effects. This work establishes a validated methodology for improving SWRO systems reliability through flow ripple suppression, with direct implications for energy efficiency and component longevity.

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The generation of a stable and reliable water jet fiber is essential for optimizing the performance of water-guided laser systems, as cavitation significantly impacts its stability. This study utilizes computational fluid dynamics to simulate various nozzle structures and analyze the effect of cavitation on water jet fiber stability. Numerical simulations were conducted to examine the behavior of downward conical nozzles both with and without cavitation effects. The research aims to explicate the mechanisms governing cavitation formation and its impact on jet stability. Additionally, this study investigates how nozzle structural parameters, including the length-to-diameter ratio, divergence angle, and orifice diameter, affect jet stability under cavitation conditions. A multi-objective genetic algorithm is subsequently employed to globally optimize the Kriging surrogate model, thereby facilitating the identification of Pareto-optimal solutions for enhancing the stability characteristics of the water jet fiber. High-speed camera visualization was utilized to systematically investigate the stability and fragmentation mechanisms of the water jet. Experiments conducted using a 532 nm green laser source confirmed that the optimized downward conical nozzle can produce a stable water jet fiber. Specifically, an optimized nozzle with a 0.08 mm aperture can generate a stable water jet fiber extending up to 84 mm in length under an inlet pressure of 5.0 MPa, thus meeting the requirements for efficient water-laser coupling. This study provides valuable insights and guidance for enhancing water-guided laser processing technology and its practical engineering applications.

Abstract :

The rapid development of flexible electronics technology has led to the popularity of wearable electronic devices and flexible electronic skins in various fields such as medicine, health monitoring, entertainment, military, and robotics. In this study, carbon black (CB) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were prepared through stirring and ultrasonication to fabricate a composite sensitive layer (CSL). A flexible encapsulation layer was then produced using FDM-3D printing with Thermoplastic Polyurethane-83A (TPU-83A) as the material. Meanwhile, a functional liquid alloy was created by mixing iron nano-powder and liquid alloys. Flexible electrodes were printed on the flexible encapsulation layer using an overlaying printing technique. Finally, all three components were thermally encapsulated to fabricate a flexible piezoresistive sensor (FPS). The microstructure of the CSL was investigated, along with its sensing mechanism. Importantly, comprehensive tests were conducted to assess its compressive mechanical properties, electrical characteristics, and sensing capabilities including detection range, sensing range, response time, dynamic response performance, and durability. The structural and sensing properties of the FPS were optimized and enhanced, enabling its successful utilization in human motion detection and contact detection of flexible actuators under various strains, thereby showcasing its excellent sensing characteristics. These findings ensure the promising applications of the FPS in the domains of human-robot interaction and soft robotics sensing.

Abstract :

The stability of the water jet flow used in water-guided laser processing plays a crucial role in determining the quality of the processing process. The present study aims to investigate the effect of water-laser coupling device and nozzle geometry on the stable length of a water-guided laser beam. A numerical model is developed to analyze the internal flow field within the coupling device. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are employed to examine how variations in cone nozzle's length-to-diameter ratio, divergence angle, nozzle aperture, and inlet pressure that affect the flow characteristics of water jet. Subsequently, the Latin Hypercube experimental design method is employed to establish parameter samples and construct a Kriging approximation model for the stable length of water-guided laser beam. The Multiple Island Genetic Algorithm (MIGA) is utilized for global optimization of the approximation model, while CFD methods are employed to analyze and validate the optimization results. Finally, experimental verification was conducted to determine the stable length of water-guided laser beam generated by the optimized cone nozzle structure. The research findings demonstrate that the optimized nozzle structure can compensate for approximately 21 mm in the stable distance of water-guided laser beam under the pressure of 5.0 MPa. This study provides valuable guidance for enhancing the performance and engineering applications of laser micro-jet processing technology.

Abstract :

This study proposes a multi-fidelity efficient global optimization framework for the structural optimization of self-excited oscillation cavity. To construct a high-precision multi-fidelity surrogate model to correlate the structural parameters of a self-excited oscillation cavity with the gas precipitation and energy consumption characteristics by effectively fuzing the information of different fidelity levels, choosing different correlation functions and hyper-parameter estimation methods, and learning the correlation between the data. The optimization framework determines various sampling methods and quantities by calculating the minimum Euclidean distance between sample points and sensitivity index. To enhance computational efficiency, a multi-fidelity sample library is established by utilizing both precise and coarse computational fluid dynamics grids. The expected improvement criterion-based algorithm for global optimization is employed as an additive strategy to incorporate additional data points into the model. This approach considers both local and global search of the model, thereby enhancing sample accuracy while reducing computation time. Moreover, the utilization of the highly generalized Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) for identifying the Pareto optimal solution set enhances convergence speed. The proposed optimization framework in this study achieves a remarkable level of model accuracy and provides optimal solutions even with a limited sample size. It can be widely used in engineering optimization problems.

Abstract :

Seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology has been universally adopted because of its high efficiency, economic benefits, easy maintenance, and high-pressure seawater pump (HPSP) and energy recovery device (ERD) are essential components, which determine the specific energy consumption of SWRO system. However, it is still unclear about energy dissipation mechanism and mixing characteristics from the perspective of system. For that, this thesis proposes a novel system-level Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model considering all interfaces in HPSP and integrated energy recovery and pressure boost device (IERPBD). To profoundly investigate the system performance under various operating conditions, the pressure and composition distribution, power loss of each interface and mixing rate are numerically calculated and analyzed. Additionally, experiment of the effect of temperature on SWRO system performance is conducted to practically verify the proposed model, which indicates that the presented model could precisely reflect the energy dissipation and mixing characteristics. Besides, it is advised that the rotating speed of HPSP and IERPBD should not be set too high which could increase the mixing rate and energy consumption, and higher temperature might lower the quality of produced freshwater. This study offers a feasible way to reveal the energy dissipation mechanism of SWRO desalination system.

Abstract :

In this study, a series dual-chamber self-excited oscillation nozzle (SDSON) for atomization was developed for photodecomposition of oily wastewater. In order to address the computational complexity associated with optimizing this nozzle, a surrogate model that integrates computational fluid dynamics simulation is proposed. By employing a multi-objective optimization algorithm that combines Genetic Algorithm and Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, significant improvements in atomization performance have been achieved. The influencing factors of atomization and their interactions on the nozzle's atomization performance have been analyzed. The entropy weight method was employed in conjunction with gray theory to rank the optimal solutions based on weighted correlation evaluation, resulting in the determination of the most favorable design solutions. The optimized design exhibited significant enhancements in turbulence kinetic energy and gas volume fraction at the nozzle outlet. Atomization experiments confirmed that the optimized SDSON generated smaller and more uniformly sized droplets under identical inlet pressure conditions, thereby greatly improving atomization performance.

Abstract :

Combining multiple advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is essential for the efficient treatment of dye wastewater. In this study, the degradation efficiencies of various oxidation methods, including hydrodynamic cavitation (HC), dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma oxidation, ultraviolet C (UVC), and their combination HC + DBD + UVC, were investigated for Methyl Orange (MO). The photolysis of ozone (O-3) and the degradation mechanism associated with HC + DBD + UVC were analyzed to elucidate the pathway of MO degradation. The results demonstrated that the combination of HC + DBD + UVC exhibited a significantly enhanced degradation efficiency compared to other process combinations, achieving a removal efficiency exceeding 91% within a 5-min timeframe. Optimal parameters for achieving a 99.5% degradation rate of 10 mg/L MO were determined as follows: pH 4, inlet pressure of 1.5 MPa, utilization of eight UV lamps with a power input of 46.11 W. During the degradation process, hydroxyl radicals (OH) and ozone (O-3) played crucial roles, while the incorporation of UV lamps effectively mitigated ozone (O-3) emissions and enhanced the oxidation of ozone (O-3). In conjunction with the analysis of degradation products using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, it is highly probable that the MO degradation pathway involves reductive cleavage of the azo bond through OH attack. Compared to other experimental methods in literature, HC + DBD + UVC exhibits significant advantages such as enhanced efficiency and absence of additives. This innovative approach offers a rapid and practical on-site solution for efficient MO dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract :

Low-frequency vibration control is a crucial challenge within the realm of fluid physics, and in this paper, a novel magnetic compound fluid (MCF) has been developed to produce a magnetic fluid nonlinear energy sink (MF-NES) with optimum energy consumption efficiency. The mixed doping of bi-dispersed nano-sized iron particles (NIPs) and micrometer-sized carbonyl iron particles (CIPs) can generate a load-bearing structure between the inertial mass and the MF-NES shell with a reduced friction coefficient. The effectiveness and sensitivity of the MF-NES mechanism is significantly enhanced, particularly in responding to low frequency vibrations. To predict and quantify the friction coefficient of the MF, a novel hybrid approach combining data handling and a genetic algorithm model was developed and rigorously validated through empirical data obtained from the experiments and demonstrated that the bi-dispersed NIPs/CIPs MCF had a notably lower friction coefficient, making it adept at responding to low-frequency and even ultra-low-frequency vibrations.
