Abstract:

In this paper, we reported on the Gd nano-precipitation in a Mg-2.0Gd (at.%) solid solution foil revealed directly by means of the in-situ TEM technique. It had been found that unusual FCC-structured Gd platelets (beta(1)') (Fm (3) over bar m, a = 0.534 nm) can be precipitated in the Mg-Gd matrix at 250 degrees C. As a thermally stable phase, the beta(1)'-platelets were observed to have non-equivalent precipitation orientation with respect to the matrix. Most of the beta(1)'-phases grew along {10 (1) over bar0}(Mg) planes and had an orientation relationship (OR) of <001>(beta 1')//<0001>(Mg), {1 (1) over bar0}(beta 1')//{1 (2) over bar 10}(Mg), while the minority of them grew along {1 (2) over bar 10}(Mg) planes (or {1 (2) over bar 10}(Mg) + 15 degrees deviation) with an OR of <001>(beta 1')//<0001>(Mg), {0 (1) over bar0}(beta 1')//{1 (2) over bar 10}(Mg) (or {0 (1) over bar0}(beta 1')//{1 (2) over bar 10}(Mg) - 10 degrees deviation).
