Abstract:
As shown for the system in study, the eutectic Pt-C, the conditions in terms of the impurity content on the one hand and the heat-input rate on the other, are such that melting is triggered invariably at the inside of the ingot, even though heat is injected from its outside. But under current conditions melting from the outside will start sometime during the melting process, resulting in "Two-front" melting, covering the main part of the process. The effects of "Inside melting only", "Outside melting only" and "Two-front melting" on the relation between the melting curve T-cav(t), as measured, and the melting profile T-m(x), associated with the impurity profile, embedded in the ingot during the preceding freeze, will be analyzed in a one-dimensional diagrammatic representation. Any of the melting characteristics, measured, or modelled, are described by an effective Scheil function, where the differences between the Scheil parameters are considered indicative of the effects, searched for.
