Abstract:

The conventional technology of energy dissipation and shock absorption requires the layout of shock absorption devices installed on multiple floors to effectively reduce the seismic response of a structure, which occupies more structural space. Thus, a negative stiffness device was proposed to be arranged on the lower floor of the structure which formed a mechanically isolated layer to reduce the quantity of dampers and achieved the similar isolation effect by virtue of proper friction damping components. A kind of negative stiffness friction damping device was designed and developed. It has the advantages of large stroke and stable mechanical properties. The performance test verifies that the negative stiffness friction damping device can realize the hysteretic model with negative stiffness. The simulation analysis of the damping scheme shows that if only the device is placed on the bottom floor, the negative stiffness damping device can obtain an ideal damping effect. © 2021, Editorial Office of Journal of Vibration and Shock.
