Abstract:

To overcome the disadvantage of single yield performance of traditional metal damper, the metal tube damper with energy dissipation members composed of two steel strips with different aspect ratios was proposed, and it has the multi-stage yield and failure characteristics. The mechanical properties of the damper were studied based on quasi-static test, so that the multi-stage yield and failure performance of the metal tube damper was verified and its failure mechanism was revealed. Furthermore, the hysteretic behavior, stiffness degradation performance and energy dissipation capacity of the metal tube damper were investigated, and the influence of low yield point steel of steel strips with different aspect ratios was studied. The experimental results indicate that the damper has multi-stage yield and failure characteristics, good deformation capacity and energy dissipation performance. By applying low yield point steel to different parts of the damper, different functions can be realized. The finite element model of the damper was established, and then the simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental results, verifying the correctness of the finite element model. Finally, the calculation formulas of its key performance parameters were proposed, and the feasibility of the trilinear model and the Bouc-Wen model for characterizing the damper was validated. © 2022 Editorial Office of China Civil Engineering Journal.
