Abstract:
Mortise-tenon joints in actual projects are usually complicated and composed of various patterns in actual projects, which are commonly called unitized mortise-tenon joints. The study is based on The Wen Su Pavilion in Shenyang Imperial Palace, with one of the important unitized mortise-tenon joints as research objects, which contains several different kinds of tenons and can influence the structures dramatically. The pseudo-static experiment was conducted on a full-size timber-joint model to analyze its deformation characteristics and failure modes. The corresponding moment-rotation hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, characteristic parameters and restoring force model were obtained. The results show that the models with mortise-tenon joints exhibit excellent deformation behavior. The destruction of the joint is due to the separation of mortise and tenon. The hysteretic hoops are Z-shaped, which indicates the properties of semi-rigid connection of the timber mortise-tenon joints. The restoring force model built up can provide not only the necessary theoretical basis for finite element analysis of Wen Su Pavilion but also the experimental basis for further protection and restoration of ancient buildings of the same type. © 2018, Editorial Board of Journal of Tianjin University(Science and Technology).
