Abstract:
The effect of sodium gluconate(SG) on the corresponding hydration process of cement and regulation mechanism was discussed. Some accelerators such as calcium hydroxide(CH), aluminum sulfate(AS) and calcium nitrate(CN) were added into sodium gluconate-retarded cement paste. Effect of accelerators on the setting time, heat of hydration, and strength development of cement paste was investigated. The suppression mechanism of accelerator for the retarding effect of sodium gluconate was discussed, thus establishing a 'retarding-accelerating' system, which uses aluminum sulfate and calcium nitrate to suppress the retarding effect of sodium gluconate. The results show that sodium gluconate accelerates the hydration of 3CaO•Al2O3(C3A) and the formation of entringite(AFt). Also, sodium gluconate can control the hydration of 3CaO•SiO2(C3S) and the formation of CH because of its adsorbing and complex action. On the whole, the cement hydration is retarded. The addition of accelerator breaks the dense protective film around C3S of sodium gluconate-retarded cement and provides the crystal nucleus for the crystallization of CH, thus promoting the hydration of sodium gluconate-retarded cement. © 2018, Editorial Department of Journal of the Chinese Ceramic Society.
