Abstract:

In order to research the overall buckling behavior of the duplex EN 1.4462 stainless steel I-shaped columns under axial compression, experiments on eleven full-scale specimens were conducted. According to the initial bending measured before the test, and loading eccentricity obtained during the test, failure mode and buckling capacity of all the columns were clarified based on the experimental results, and calculated results were compared with current European steel structure design code (EN 1993-1-4) and Chinese steel structure design code (GB 50017-2003). According to the test results, all the specimens fail in overall buckling mode (five are strong axis buckling mode and six are weak axis buckling mode) and no local buckling occurs, and torsional phenomenon is observed in some specimens. Besides, specimens with relatively large slenderness are prone to elastic buckling, and specimens with relatively small slenderness are prone to elasto-plastic buckling. The tested buckling strengths are relatively higher than those in EN 1993-1-4, indicating that the design curves from EN 1993-1-4 are generally conservative. However, the test values are relatively lower than those in GB 50017-2003, indicating that the design curves from GB 50017-2003 are generally unsafe. ©, 2015, Science Press. All right reserved.
