Abstract:
Algal extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are complex, high-molecular-weight polymers, whose physicochemical properties have demonstrated outstanding efficacy for resources recovery and wastewater treatment. In this study, VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used to conduct a systematic bibliometric analysis of research related to algal EPS. Based on keyword co-occurrence and cluster analysis, the primary research directions focus on the production and application of algal EPS. This paper delves into these topics in detail, taking into account current research hotspots and gaps. Algal EPS production is regulated by gene proteases and influenced by environmental stress. The composition and structure of EPS can be modified by regulating its biosynthesis through the quorum sensing system. The key applications of algal EPS include: (1) serving as a novel flocculant to enhance the harvesting of algae biomass; (2) promoting the formation and stable operation of aggregates in the algalbacterial granular sludge process; (3) facilitating the removal and transformation of heavy metals, antibiotics, and other pollutants into harmless substances; and (4) acting as a carrier for the marine carbon cycle, which aids in the circulation of marine materials.
