Abstract:
The coupling between axial and bending stiffness of hollow spherical joint should be considered in the dynamic failure analysis of shell element model in order to obtain more accurate results than the commonly used beam element model. However, this shell element model, which considers the coupling effect of joint, can't be used in simulation generally, because in the case of huge quantity of complicated shell elements, much more time consuming will be needed in computation than the common model. On the other hand, the commonly used beam element model needs fewer elements, but the error of results will become obvious in dynamic analysis. Accordingly, a new relatively simplified model, which considers the effect of joint stiffness by using beam element in the spherical joint zone, was put forward. The precision of simulation can be improved clearly by using low stiffness tube elements in the joint zone, and the computing time does not increase too much. The model is fit for the dynamic stability analysis of such structures.
