Abstract:

Three buckling-restrained brace concrete frames (BRBCF) with different BRB or beam sections, which were normal reinforced concrete beam with monoclinic BRB, flat beam with monoclinic BRB, normal reinforced concrete beam with invert-V BRB, were designed, manufactured and tested by quasi-static test. The seismic performance, including cracks on concrete elements, lateral load-displacement loops, skeleton curves, tangent stiffness and its degradation, and BRB load-deformation curves, were studied. Test results show that the BRB and concrete frame can effectively work together to resist lateral force. The system has plump and stable hysteric load-displacement curves. The BRB can start to dissipate energy by yielding at relatively small story drift ratio, and avoid failure at large lateral drift ratio. It is validated that the equivalent viscous damping can thus be increased and the seismic response be reduced, resulting in an improved structural performance. The designed concrete joints, the embedded parts and the connectors function well and reliably.
