Abstract:

Driver behavior is a crucial point in highway safety, and of particular importance in traffic behavior studies. An approach to detect driver motions that directly contribute to vehicle maneuver is proposed. Motion capture is the process of recording and tracking driver's body movements. Firstly, driver motion capture technique is used to obtain the position information of some key joints of driver's body in 3D space and the driver motion database is then established. Secondly, driver behavior is analyzed based on the motion data collected. Thirdly, characteristics of driver motions are combined with the database to recognize driver motions and calibrate motion parameters, including motion speed, movement intensity etc., which can offer a better understanding of driver behavior. The procedures of capturing, modeling, analyzing, and recognizing driver motions in real driving environment provide an effective method for the research on complex driver behavior, and the method of charactering driver behavior using motion capture will make substantial contribution in further research on driver behavior.
