Abstract:
Design aspects of the Badminton Arena for the year 2008 Olympic Games, which is located at Beijing University of Technology, are discussed. The roof covering the arena is a suspended dome spanning 98m and is considered to be the widest self-balancing and cable supported dome in the world. The total weight of the roof has been reduced to 1200t through optimized design techniques, and the adoption of a cable-supported dome met the demand of aesthetics as well as resulted in steel saving. The cable-supported dome systems belong to a group of cable-bar hybrid structural systems, which consists entirely of beam elements, bars, and cables. A sequence of tensioning, over-tensioning and relaxing has been adopted to reduce influence of friction and further meet the other design requirements.
