Abstract:
New 2D and 3D hierachical networks, super carbon nanotubes (SNTs), have been constructed by using single carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) as building blocks. Then, an SNT/polymer composite can be built by insert a polymer into the SNT network. In this paper, a 3-D multi-scale finite element model consisting of a SNT, inter-phase and surrounding polymer is built. C-C bonds in SNT are considered as a 3D elastic beam and the inter-phase region is treated using van der Waals interactions. The surrounding matrix are regarded as a continuum medium. Deformation process and tensile stress-strain relations of SNT and SNT composite under small strain are obtained.
