Abstract:

In the big cities of China, pedestrians and bicycles have a great impact on the capacity of right-turn lane vehicle movement at signalized intersections. In most cases, pedestrians become the main factor in the capacity of movement in the right-turn lane, This paper attempts to explore the potential capacity of right turn movement when there are conflicts between right-turn vehicles and pedestrians at signalized intersections. In order to take this impact into account in the capacity calculation, it is assumed that all pedestrians obey the traffic regulations, which means pedestrians cross the intersection only when the pedestrians' signal indication is on. The objective of this study is to quantitatively analyze the impact of pedestrians on the capacity of right-turn vehicles at signalized intersections with regard to different signal phases. In order to reach this objective, a new concept of 'Pedestrian Group' is introduced in this paper, where the capacity model of the right-turn lane at signalized intersection is based on gap acceptance theory. The results of this study has great importance for the development of capacity analysis and our own Manual. © 2009 ASCE.
