Abstract:
Traffic safety is a difficult problem around the world. It is desirable to analyze the crash distribution rules to reduce traffic crashes. However, extensive research is needed to support policy-makers and road safety engineers to make scientific decisions and to take effective measures in China. The objective of the paper is to reveal the distribution rules of crashes in China. Using statistics data, this paper discusses crash frequency and severity distributions by various factors, including temporal dimension, road factors (such as road classes or functions, geometric alignment, etc.), vehicles factors, and drivers' factors in details. The distributions of crash type and crash causes are also examined in the paper. A series of useful and interesting conclusions are available for domestic and overseas traffic policy-makers and road safety engineers. © 2009 ASCE.
