Abstract:
The fatigue crack propagation and the crack closure behaviour of 15Mn mild steel in 3.5% sodium chloride solution are studied. An equation to calculate the crack closure effect induced by corrosion products is proposed. The results reveal that the crack closure effect has a remarkable influence on corrosion fatigue. The crack closure effect decreases and disappears with crack propagation. The effect of crack closure on the crack growth rate and on the corrosion fatigue mechanisms is discussed. © 1991.
