Abstract :
Ride quality monitoring is crucial for the sustainable development of modern urban transportation infrastructure. This study innovatively designed a two-phase synergetic framework for monitoring the ride quality of urban roads using smartphone sensing technology. Firstly, a convolutional neural network integrated multi -head attention mechanism was developed to quantify the driving comfort from whole-body vibrations. Then, a multi -source driving comfort data fusion strategy was proposed to monitor the road sections with poor ride quality. The experimental results show that: (1) the consistency between the developed model outputs and the results quantified by ISO 2631 - 1 exceeds 90%; (2) visual inspection results of ride quality monitoring align with actual pavement conditions. Compared to existing studies, the designed framework avoids over-reliance on prior knowledge and improves objectivity and reliability of ride quality monitoring. This study provides a novel insight into urban road monitoring and thus contributes to the refined management of urban road assets.

Abstract :
This research studies the durability of self-compacting concrete (SCC) with fly ash (FA), coal gangue powder (CGP), cement kiln dust (CKD), and recycled concrete powder (RCP) by absolute volume method. The fresh properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) mixtures were assessed by slump flow, T50 cm slump flow, and V-Funnel flow time. The strength and durability properties were evaluated using a compressive strength test, Freeze-thaw resistance, chloride ion penetration, and carbonation resistance tests. Furthermore, the pore structure of concrete after a 90-day curing period was analyzed using Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP), which provided valuable information on the distribution and properties of pores inside the material. The results revealed that SCC with FA and CKD performed best with a slump flow of 700 mm. Specimens with FA and RCP have greater compressive strength after 90 days of curing, making them appropriate for high-strength applications. In terms of freeze-thaw resistance, SCC with CGP exhibits the lowest mass loss rate, indicating the best resistance, followed by FA and CKD, with RCP showing the least resistance. FA and CKD have excellent enhancement effects for SCC resistance to chloride ions. Specimens with RCP have the lowest carbonation depth and the best carbonation resistance. The findings suggest that the concrete specimens with fly ash (FA) have the highest total pore area and porosity, with a wide range of pore sizes and a prominent peak in the capillary pore size range, indicating a highly porous structure. This study provides practical advice on how to use SCC in construction and improve material selection and optimization.

Abstract :
Aiming at the current situation that the highway milepost and geodetic coordinates matching methods are less intelligent and less accurate, resulting in the efficiency and accuracy of the milepost matching methods cannot meet the requirements of practical applications, this paper applies centimeter-level combined inertial navigation system and binocular camera to collect road spatial information and image data, adopts trajectory planning method and image recognition technology for data analysis, and obtains continuous collection trajectory. Based on the principle of 3D scene restoration by binocular stereo vision, this paper proposes a method to obtain the geographic coordinates of mileage stakes through the parallel view of stake number plate and realizes the high accuracy and fast matching of highway mileage stakes and geodetic coordinates. The experimental results show that the method can better achieve the rapid matching of highway mileage stakes and geodetic coordinates, and the average accuracy of stakes matching reaches the decimeter level, which can meet the requirements of most current application scenarios.

Abstract :
In recent years, the cost of road maintenance has been increasing annually, and the importance of preventive maintenance for roads has been gaining more attention. Nevertheless, due to the varying maintenance times and long-term performance data of different roads, it is difficult to accurately assess the benefit of different preventive maintenance measures. In this study, the thin overlay, slurry seal, chip seal, and crack seal were considered as preventive maintenance measures, and the roughness, rutting, transverse cracking, longitudinal cracking, and alligator cracking as the long-term pavement performance. The data of maintenance measures and the long-term performance of pavement was selected from the long-term pavement performance (LTPP) database. The dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm was used to evaluate the long-term performance of pavement that was maintained by different preventive maintenance measures and at different time. Results showed that the thin overlay has the most remarkable improvement effect on international roughness index (IRI) and rut depth (RD) of pavement, but the improvement effect of the other three maintenance measures on the long-term performance of pavement is almost the same and relatively small. The crack seals of longitudinal, transverse, and alligator cracks have little improvement on the long-term performance of the pavement. The DTW method showed excellent superiority in the evaluation of long-term pavement performance.

Abstract :
With the development of cell phone technology, smartphone nowadays is no longer limited to communication but is also well used in fields such as traffic engineering, where they can be used to collect driving vibration data to evaluate pavement performance. The approach based on smartphones could effectively reduce the cost of pavement detection, in which the relationship between smartphone test data and pavement performance is the essence of the method. This study predicted the international roughness index (IRI) based on an improved PSO-BP neural network method using the driving vibration data collected by a self- developed smartphone application. The results show that the driving speed, acquisition frequency, experimental vehicle, and the attitude of mobile phones have a significant impact on the vibration data. The regression value (R) of the roughness optimized by PSO is 0.90, and the average relative error is 18.01%, which is improved by 4.29% compared with the traditional BP neural network. The pavement roughness can be more accurately predicted by using the method proposed in this study, which provides theoretical support for the further development of the intelligent detection of pavement performance.

Abstract :
Road temperature-regulating phase change materials (PCM) can reduce the impact of high temperatures on asphalt pavements in summer. In this study, a PCM/ SBS-modified composite asphalt was produced by melt blending of paraffin/expanded graphite/high-density polyethylene composite-shaped phase change materials (PHDP) and SBS-modified asphalt. Then the physical property tests and rheological property tests were conducted. The result showed that compared to SBS-modified asphalt without PHDP, PHDP/SBS-modified composite asphalt had decreased consistency and temperature sensitivity, but increased low-temperature performance. The rotary viscosity, zero shear viscosity, and complex modulus of PHDP/ SBS modified composite asphalt decreased with the increase of the content, but the phase angle was improved. Therefore, the deformation resistance of PHDP/SBS-modified composite asphalt was reduced but the fatigue performance was improved. Due to it containing polymeric structures, PHDP/SBS-modified composite asphalt still has good rutting resistance and elastic recovery ability at 64 degrees C. This study can provide some reference value for the application of PCMs in high-performance pavement.

Abstract :
Cohesive zone model (CZM) has gained considerable attention to investigate the fracture mechanism of asphalt mixture. The parameters of CZM in finite element (FE) model could be validated according to the semicircular bending test (SCB) results. The fracture energy and strength of asphalt mixture would be obtained based on the CZM parameters after validation. As a temperature sensitive material, the influence of temperature on the fracture properties of asphalt mixture needs to be investigated. In this study, the viscoelastic mechanic parameters of AC-13 asphalt mixture were tested through uniaxial compression test. Then the SCB tests were conducted at the temperature of 15 degrees C, 25 degrees C, and 35 degrees C. The bilinear CZM parameters as well as the fracture energy and strength at different temperature were determined through an optimization approach with high efficiency. The results showed that the strength of asphalt mixture decreases with the increase of temperature, then the decrease of strength reduce its fracture energy.

Abstract :
The generalized Maxwell (GM) constitutive model has been widely applied to characterize the viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures. The parameters (Prony series) of the GM are usually obtained via interconversion between a dynamic modulus and relaxation modulus, and they are then input to a finite element model (FEM) as viscoelastic parameters. However, the dynamic modulus obtained with the common loading mode only provides the compressive and tensile properties of materials. Whether the compression or tensile modulus can represent the shear properties of materials related to flow rutting is still open to discussion. Therefore, this study introduced a novel method that integrates the Kriging model into the genetic algorithm as a surrogate model to determine the viscoelastic parameters of an asphalt mixture in rutting research. Firstly, a wheel tracking test (WTT) for AC-13 was conducted to clarify the flow rutting development mechanism. Secondly, two sets of the AC-13 viscoelastic parameters obtained through the optimization method and the dynamic modulus were used as inputs into the FEM simulation of the WTT to compare the simulation results. Finally, a sensitivity analysis of viscoelastic parameters was performed to improve the efficiency of parameter optimization. The results indicating the viscoelastic parameters obtained by this method could precisely characterize the development law of flow rutting in asphalt mixtures.

Abstract :
Due to the impact of COVID-19, there has been a significant increase in the production of disposable medical masks (DMM), resulting in substantial environmental damage. To address this environmental concern, numerous scholars have conducted research on the performance of DMM modified asphalt. However, there is still a lack of research regarding the influence of compatibilizer components on the performance of DMM modified asphalt. In this study, compatibilizers-B, C, and D, each with different ratios of components, were prepared by blending compatibilizer A (enriched in saturated components) with compatibilizer E (enriched in aromatics). The effects of these different compatibilizers on the properties of DMM modified asphalt were further investigated. Firstly, the high-temperature rheological properties of various samples were studied through the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test. Additionally, the mechanism of DMM modified asphalt properties under the influence of different compatibilizer components was investigated by fluorescence microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests. The performance of DMM modified asphalt in the presence of various compatibilizers was evaluated by conventional experiments. Finally, an infrared spectroscopy test was conducted to calculate the carbonyl and sulphoxide group indexes and to study the high-temperature stability of the DMM modified asphalt under the influence of different components of compatibilizer. The results indicate that the higher the aromatic content in the compatibilizer, the lower the glass transition temperature of DMM modified asphalt, leading to improved low-temperature performance. Enhanced crosslinking and dispersion of DMM fibers in the asphalt result in improved high-temperature stability and thermodynamic behavior. Comparing the samples of compatibilizer-D (48.54% aromatic compounds) and compatibilizer-E (72.82% aromatic compounds), DMM modified asphalt initially exhibits an increase in both softening point and Brookfield viscosity, followed by a decrease. Meanwhile, the penetration value shows the opposite trend, with an improvement in storage stability.

Abstract :
Pavement roughness monitoring has always been a concern in the field of road asset management. However, the utilization of laser profilometers to measure pavement roughness is costly and inconvenient. To address these challenges, this study developed a low-cost, lightweight, and rapid approach for pavement roughness estimation using smartphone sensor data. Firstly, the feasibility of the chosen smartphone in vibration acceleration acquisition was examined through micro-scale shaking table tests. Then, the Categorical Boosting (CatBoost) model with sequential model-based optimization (SMBO) approach was developed for smartphone-based pavement roughness estimation. Finally, the feature importance and feature interaction effects in the pavement roughness estimation task were interpreted using Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and Partial Dependence Plots (PDP), respectively. The results show that the chosen smartphone has great potential in vibration data acquisition, and the recorded data are highly consistent with the results obtained by the professional accelerometer. The CatBoost model outperforms the other reference models in terms of pavement roughness estimation accuracy, with coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.807, root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.553, and mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.433. Furthermore, the feature interpretation results indicate that the smartphone-based pavement roughness estimation approach relies on the coupling effects of vibration and velocity features. This study provides a novel insight into the lightweight pavement roughness estimation approach, which has potential implications for assisting pavement maintenance decision-making in road asset management.
