Abstract :

The mechanical properties and failure mechanism of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) is a hot topic in the engineering field, and the relationship between its microstructure and macroscopic mechanical properties is also a frontier research topic in the academic field. In this study, the image processing technology is used to establish a micro-structure model of lightweight aggregate concrete. Through the information extraction and processing of the section image of actual light aggregate concrete specimens, the mesostructural model of light aggregate concrete with real aggregate characteristics is established. The numerical simulation of uniaxial tensile test, uniaxial compression test and three-point bending test of lightweight aggregate concrete are carried out using a new finite element method-the base force element method respectively. Firstly, the image processing technology is used to produce beam specimens, uniaxial compression specimens and uniaxial tensile specimens of light aggregate concrete, which can better simulate the aggregate shape and random distribution of real light aggregate concrete. Secondly, the three-point bending test is numerically simulated. Thirdly, the uniaxial compression specimen generated by image processing technology is numerically simulated. Fourth, the uniaxial tensile specimen generated by image processing technology is numerically simulated. The mechanical behavior and damage mode of the specimen during loading were analyzed. The results of numerical simulation are compared and analyzed with those of relevant experiments. The feasibility and correctness of the micromodel established in this study for analyzing the micromechanics of lightweight aggregate concrete materials are verified. Image processing technology has a broad application prospect in the field of concrete mesoscopic damage analysis.

Abstract :

The relationship between the macroscopic mechanical properties of lightweight aggregate concrete and its microstructure is a hot topic in the discipline of concrete materials. It is very meaningful to provide an efficient numerical analysis method to conduct a meso-level analysis. This study proposes an automatic dissection algorithm and adapts the calculation program of the base force element method to conduct a non-linear damage analysis. In the numerical simulation, three groups of 100 mm x 100 mm x 100 mm specimens were selected for the uniaxial compression experiment and uniaxial tensile experiment, respectively. The average tensile strength of the numerical simulation for the uniaxial compression test was 21.86 MPa. The stress-strain softening curve, stress contour plot, strain contour plot, and damage plot of the light aggregate concrete were also analyzed. These research results provide data for analyzing the failure mechanism of light aggregate concrete and reveal the failure mechanism of light aggregate concrete. At the same time, the reliability of the proposed algorithm is verified. Our aim is to provide a more efficient and accurate analysis of meso-damage in lightweight aggregate concrete, which benefits industries involved in production, construction, and structural engineering.

Complementary energy principle associated with modified couple stress theory for Euler micro-beams considering support movements and negative Poisson's ratio SCIE

Abstract :

The complementary energy principle associated with the modified couple stress theory (MCST) is proposed and proved for analyzing the size effects of Euler micro-beams considering support movements and negative Poisson's ratio. The analytical solutions with the size effects are obtained and analyzed for the support reactions, internal forces, curvatures, rotations and deflections separately based on the principle. The results show that the support reactions and internal forces are greatly affected by the size effects when the support displacements are considered. It means that the size effects exist in piezoresistive pressure sensors that are sensitive to stresses. Moreover, the direction changes to the opposite for the total moment when the ratio of the material scale parameter l to the height of the micro-beam h (l/h) goes from 0 to 1. The deflections, curvatures and rotations have nothing to do with the size effects, respectively, if the support movements are only considered. Negative Poisson's ratio materials may be a good choice to verify the controversial issue of whether Poisson's ratio should be considered in the MCST beam model for the micro-scale experiments. The main reason is that the influence of negative Poisson's ratio on the size effects is larger than that of positive Poisson's ratio in the theoretical analysis. The analytical solutions agree with the published data for the deflections and rotations without the support movements.

Abstract :

On a mesoscopic scale, concrete is considered to be a heterogeneous composite material which is composed mainly of cement mortar, aggregate, an interface transition zone (ITZ), and pores. The mesoscopic model of concrete was established by applying digital image processing (DIP). To study the impact of porosity on the compressive strength of concrete, the pore equivalent model was introduced to build concrete with different pore contents. The base force element method (BFEM) based on the complementary energy principle was used in the numerical simulation of concrete. This paper investigated the effect of porosity on the strength of concrete under uniaxial compression. The results showed that the mesoscopic model of concrete based on DIP technology can better simulate the strength test and failure mechanism of concrete by using BFEM. As the porosity in the ITZ increases, the peak strength of concrete under compression decreases. The compressive strength of concrete also decreases with the growth of porosity in the mortar matrix. The ITZ porosity has a greater effect on the compressive strength of concrete than the mortar porosity.

The base force element method based on the arc-length method for stability analysis SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The Base Force Element Method (BFEM) is a simple and effective method for calculating large elastic deformation problems. In this paper, BFEM is further developed to make it useful for structural stability analysis. The generalized unbalanced displacement vector and composite tangent compliance matrix of the four-mid-node element and rod element of BFEM are proposed. BFEM can be combined with the Arc-Length Method (ALM) to analyze the stability of frame and truss structures. Through the calculation of several typical cases, the solution of this paper agrees well with the theoretical solution and the reference solution given by other methods. It is proved that the four-mid-node element and rod element of BFEM have high calculation accuracy in case of structural instability or post-buckling. In the calculation of the Lee frame, the calculation results of the four-mid-node element of BFEM are closer to the reference solutions than those of the CPS4 and CPS4R elements of general finite element software.

Abstract :

In this paper, a parallel homogenization model for recycled concrete was proposed. A new type of finite element method, the base force element method, based on the complementary energy principle and the parallel homogenization model, is used to conduct meso-level damage research on recycled concrete. The stress-strain softening curve and failure mechanism of the recycled concrete under uniaxial tensile load are analyzed using the nonlinear damage analysis program of the base force element method based on the parallel homogenization model. The tensile strength and destructive mechanisms of recycled concrete materials are studied using this parallel homogenization model. The calculation results are compared with the results of the experiments and meso-level random aggregate model analysis methods. The research results show that this parallel homogenization analysis method can be used to analyze the nonlinear damage analysis of recycled concrete materials. The tensile strength, stress-strain softening curve, and crack propagation process of recycled concrete materials can be obtained using the present method.

Phenomenon of sharp change and concise solutions for Timoshenko beam based on modified couple stress theory SCIE

Abstract :

The functional relations between the modified couple stress theory (MCST) and the classical theory (CT) are derived and analyzed in detail for closed-form solutions of Timoshenko micro-beam. The results show that phenomenon of sharp change exists in the internal force fields at two ends of the micro-beam. This phenomenon is related to dimensionless material scale parameter l/h. The phenomenon at fixed end is different from that at free end because the shear force Q at fixed end cannot be degenerated from the MCST to the CT, which is proved from a mathematical point of view. What's more, the exponential functions in the closed-form solutions of the MCST are higher-order terms and can be ignored for the deflection and rotation when Poisson's ratio nu = 0-0.45, h/L = 1/100-1/8 and the l/h = 0-1. After exponential functions are omitted, except rotation of cantilever beam under bending moment M-0, the concise solutions are acquired and error is very small. The size effects of the deflection and rotation can be calculated quickly without additional computing tools by the concise solutions. Some results obtained in this paper are compared with the published data in literatures, which prove the correctness of the results in this paper.

Abstract :

The 3-D base force element method (BFEM) for damage problems is proposed, which is applied to analyze the damage mechanism of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). A piecewise curve damage constitutive model is given to simulate the constitutive relationships of RAC phases. A spatial random aggregate model of RAC is proposed. 3-D numerical simulations of RAC under uniaxial mechanical stress are carried out. The macroscopic stress-strain relationship and failure process of RAC under uniaxial stress based on the 3-D BFEM are obtained. The numerical results show a good consistency with the experimental results. This illustrates that the numerical simulation can reflect the nonlinearity deformation, stress redistribution, and crack propagation process of RAC. In addition, the influence of recycled aggregate replacement percentage on strength and elastic modulus is investigated. The results show that the content proportion of recycled aggregate has a great effect on RAC, which have to be considered in the analysis and the application of RAC.

Abstract :

The base force element method (BFEM), formulated according the principle of complementary energy, is a new finite element method (FEM) that deals with nonlinear problems. Using the BFEM, the linear elastic model and large elastic deformation model of the plane truss element are derived, and the large elastic deformation model is expanded into a three-dimensional setting in this study. The rotating part of the element should be considered when deriving the large elastic deformation model. Accordingly, it is necessary to determine whether base force can be used as a fundamental unknown variable. Nonlinear numerical calculation is performed in combination with large elastic deformations of the truss beam and frame. The calculated results conform with the theoretical results of a solid beam with equivalent deflection. In this study, the U.L and T.L formats are used to solve the governing equations iteratively. The calculated results in the T.L format are compared with those of the T2D2 and LINK1 elements in the finite element software. Only a single loading of the T.L format is necessary, rendering it a simple and convenient approach that can improve calculation efficiency. Moreover, the arc-length method is first applied to the BFEM to solve the snap-through problem.
