Abstract :

The primary objective of this paper is to select a suitable index to characterise the change law of asphalt binder fatigue performance. Four asphalt binders were subjected to RTFOT and PAV. Frequency sweep (FS) test, Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS) test, Pure Linear Amplitude Sweep (PLAS) test were performed on aged asphalt binder to obtain Glower-Rowe (G-R) parameter, fatigue life (N-f), fatigue resistance energy index (FREI). For the LAS test, three methods (Dissipated Energy(G*sin delta), Complex Modulus (G*), Pseudo Strain Energy (PSE)) and four failure criteria (35% G*sin delta (initial), Peak Stress (Strain), Peak Stress (Pseudo-Strain), Max Storage PSE) were used to obtain the Nf. The results showed that the G-R parameter is more sensitive to aging. At high strain levels (>20%), the Nf obtained based on the 35% G*sin delta (initial )decreased with increasing aging time, while the Nf obtained based on the rest of the failure criteria showed fluctuations. The FREI of the four asphalt binders showed the multi-stage linear decrease with increasing aging time and the decrease rate of each stage was significantly different, which was similar to the cracking path of conventional materials and is favourable for determining the location of the inflection points.

Mechanical response and damage evaluation of cement-stabilized crushed stone base roads under load and freeze-thaw coupling effects SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 458 | CONSTRUCTION AND BUILDING MATERIALS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Cement stabilized crushed stone base material is widely used in pavement structures, but it is prone to damage under complex loads and freeze-thaw cycles, which can lead to pavement failure. Due to insufficient consideration of the behavior of the material under the coupling conditions of freeze-thaw and dynamic loads in engineering, there are deficiencies in the assessment of its freeze-thaw damage mechanism and fatigue life. Based on this, this article constructs a fully controlled load freeze-thaw test system suitable for simulating structures of cement stabilized crushed stone base, and based on this test system, the mechanical response of small-sized pavement structures under load freeze-thaw action is measured. The results indicate that compared to a single load, freeze-thaw cycles and load coupling accelerate the deterioration of pavement structures and produce greater deformation in the crushed stone base. Finally, the load freeze-thaw damage factor was constructed and introduced into the fatigue equation. The life prediction equation for freeze-thaw damage of cement stabilized crushed stone base structure was derived and established, providing a theoretical basis for guiding the engineering application of cement stabilized crushed stone base materials in cold regions.

Abstract :

The aims of this study is to prospectively study the aging evolution of CRMA from the perspective of a multi-phase composite system. In this study, the multi-phase separation of CRMA was carried out by physical filtration and chemical extraction, and the multi-phase aging evolution of CRMA was investigated. The results showed a general increase in the density of the remaining sub-phases of CRMA during aging, except the liquid asphalt binder phase (LABP). The volume of the adsorbed asphalt binder phase (AABP) increased by 17.91% after TFOT aging and decreased after PAV aging, reflecting the demonstrating a change in the multi-phase structure of CRMA. The complex shear modulus of each phase of CRMA increased after aging, but the amplitude of the change was smaller than that of 70# asphalt binder. Adsorbed phase (AP) and AABP inhibited the susceptibility of CRMA high and low temperature properties to aging, respectively. The adsorption protection provided by crumb rubber inhibited the volatilisation and oxidation of the aromatics within the adsorbed asphalt binder phase. Both CRMA and its sub-phases contain polymer phases. Polymer dispersion was more evenly in AABP, and polymer agglomeration was present in AP. The swelling effect caused the polymer to disperse more unevenly.

Study on the Low-Temperature Performance Evaluation Indicators of Asphalt Binder Based on the Poker Chip Test SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 18 (6) | MATERIALS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Low-temperature cracking is a primary failure mode of asphalt pavement. The poker chip test provides a straightforward and efficient approach to simulating the film state of asphalt binders in asphalt structures. By measuring the tensile strength and ultimate tensile strain of the binder film, this test can effectively evaluate the cracking resistance and ductility of asphalt binders. Accordingly, this study employed the poker chip test to analyze the evolutions of low-temperature cracking resistance under various aging levels. To ensure the reliability of tensile strength and ultimate tensile strain, a Pearson correlation analysis was conducted between the two indicators and the traditional low-temperature performance evaluation indicators: stiffness modulus, creep rate, and the Glover-Rowe (G-R) parameter. The results indicate that the tensile strength and ultimate tensile strain of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified asphalt are higher than those of 70# base asphalt at the same aging level. With increasing aging time, the tensile strength of both SBS-modified asphalt and 70# base asphalt increases, while the ultimate tensile strain decreases. Additionally, the tensile strength and ultimate tensile strain are sensitive to changes in asphalt binder types and aging levels. They have a good linear correlation with stiffness modulus and creep rate, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.9. Due to the distinct characteristics represented, the correlation between the two indicators and the G-R parameter is relatively weaker, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.7. The findings of this study demonstrate that tensile strength and ultimate tensile strain are effective indicators for assessing the low-temperature performance of asphalt binders. They can serve as substitute indicators of stiffness modulus and creep rate, respectively.

Investigation of the impact of mineral adsorption on asphalt binder aging through rheological and chemical analyses SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Mineral aggregate is a significant constituent of any given asphalt mixture, and the aging performance of the binder is affected by the adsorption characteristics of the binder onto the mineral aggregate surface. In this study, the minerals commonly found in aggregates (CaO, MgO, Fe2O3, Al2O3 and SiO2) were used as representative model compounds. The residual-free asphalt binder after adsorption on different mineral types was obtained using a novel mineral adsorption column technique developed for this study. The macro- and micro-properties of the residual asphalt binders before and after aging were compared, and the effect of different types of mineral adsorption on the aging of the asphalt binder was explored. The polar fractions-based composition of the residual free asphalt binder was utilised to better understand the mechanisms of asphalt binder adsorption by minerals. The results showed that the effect of binder adsorption on different types of minerals on binder aging performance varies with the mineral type. Due to the selective adsorption of different minerals, the polarity transformation of asphalt binder components accelerated and also affected the binder aging.

Using rheology to study the synergistic effect of anti-aging modifier and rejuvenator on aged asphalt binder SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 , 447 | CONSTRUCTION AND BUILDING MATERIALS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

A composite anti-aging rejuvenator for road asphalt was studied and prepared. Asphalt samples with different aging degrees and modifier dosages were prepared by RTFOT(rolling thin film oven) and PAV(pressure aging vessle), and the viscoelastic, high temperature, low temperature and fatigue properties of the modified asphalt were comprehensively characterised based on their rheological properties. The test results showed that the composite anti-aging rejuvenator improved the fatigue performance and low temperature performance of aging asphalt. Among them, the creep rate m value at - 18 degrees C was recovered to 99.2 % of the unaged level, and the G-R (Glover-Rowe) parameter was reduced to more than 90 %. After long term aging of the composite anti-aging reclaimed mixtures were still able to maintain the water stability and low temperature performance higher than the level required by the specification. The paper found the better effect of adding same ratio of rejuvenator and anti-aging agent to aging asphalt. The reason was that the same ratio of rejuvenator and anti-aging agent could have synergistic effect and enhance each other. This paper verified the road value of the composite antiaging rejuvenator from asphalt and asphalt mixtures, which provides technical support and reference for the promotion of old pavement reclamation and long-life pavement.

The State of the Art on Phase Change Material-Modified Asphalt Pavement SCIE SSCI

Abstract :

During the construction and maintenance of asphalt pavement, a lot of non-renewable resources are consumed, which discharge a variety of waste gasses and smoke, causing a serious impact on the environment. Reducing society's reliance on non-renewable resources is therefore key to improving sustainability. It is found that phase change materials (PCMs), as environmentally friendly materials, can spontaneously store and release heat energy by changing the phase state, thus reducing the adverse effect of temperature on asphalt pavement, reducing the occurrence of high-temperature stress, minimizing the cost of road construction and maintenance, and saving resources. In order to promote the application of PCMs in asphalt pavement, to promote self-controlling temperature technology for asphalt pavement, and to improve the sustainable development of asphalt pavement, this paper reviews the research status of PCMs in asphalt pavement, both domestically and abroad. The results show that the thermal conductivity of the modified asphalt binder can reach 0.29-0.39 W/mK, and the thermal diffusivity can reach 0.2-0.3 mm2/s, but the influence on the viscosity of the asphalt is limited, and both are less than 2000CP. The durability and thermal stability of the modified asphalt mixture are improved, and the maximum temperature can be lowered by 9 degrees C, which effectively reduces the occurrence of hightemperature stress. This review will help to better understand the function of PCMs and promote the sustainable development of green and environmentally friendly asphalt pavement.

Effect of Changes in the Content of Catana Phase in the Asphalt Binder on the Mechanical Properties
期刊论文 | 2024 | INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PAVEMENT RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

During the aging and rejuvenation process of asphalt binder, the proportion of the catana phase in the bee structure on its appearance will change, and the influence of this change on the mechanical performances of the asphalt binder needs to be further investigated. Therefore, a two-dimensional finite element model of the bee structure is constructed on account of the processed AFM images of asphalt binder. The stress and strain distribution law about asphalt binder microstructure was investigated by comparing and analyzing the results of simulation calculations. The results of the study show that the stress in the catana phase of asphalt binder appearance is significantly larger than that in the peri phase, the internal stress in the para phase is the lowest. The catana phase exhibits the least tensile strain due to the fact that it has the largest modulus of elasticity, whereas the tensile strain within the asphalt binder is mainly concentrated in the para phase.

Study on temperature regulation capability of asphalt mixture modified by dual phase change material used in ultra-thin overlay SCIE

Abstract :

A dual-phase change material (DPCM) containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400/expanded graphite (EG) and PEG1500/EG with both high and low-temperature regulation capacities was prepared. It was added as an additive to the NovaChip-Type C asphalt mixtures. Laboratory and field temperature regulation tests were designed. The images taken by SEM showed that PEG was fully adsorbed by EG and the structure of DPCM was stable. The test results showed the DPCM has good durability in the cyclic phase change process. The modified asphalt binders with different DPCM content showed different heat storage capacity. The results of temperature regulation tests showed that the addition of DPCM effectively reduced the temperature change rate of asphalt mixtures. With 1.88% DPCM, the extremum of high temperature of asphalt mixtures reduced by 2.3 degrees C while the extremum of low temperature increased by 2.0 degrees C. In terms of road performance, the cracking resistance at low temperature of asphalt mixtures gradually improved with the increase of DPCM content. Meanwhile, the rutting resistance at high temperature and water damage resistance still met the requirements of the specification. The DPCM had a good effect on restraining the occurrence of road diseases caused by temperature and prolonging the service life of the road.

Abstract :

The use of antioxidants in asphalt binder is significant in prolonging the service life of asphalt pavements. In order to improve the aging resistance of asphalt binder, an antioxidant was mixed into SBS modified asphalt binder in this study. The effects of the antioxidant on the properties and aging resistance of SBS modified asphalt binder were characterised based on rheological parameters, chemical composition and morphology. The results showed that the aging resistance index quantitatively evaluated the aging resistance of different asphalt binders. The average aging resistance index of asphalt binder with 3% antioxidant based on different properties index was about 3.5, which meant it can prolong the aging life by approximately 3.5 times. The control of carbonyl and sulfoxide formation by antioxidant was the key driver to inhibit the macroscopic property degradation of asphalt binder. However, the antioxidant did not effectively inhibit the degradation of SBS modifiers during aging.
