Design, Implementation and Environmental Impact of Cutoff Wall for Pollution Control in an Industrial Legacy Site SCIE

Abstract :

Heavy metal-organic pollutants compound pollution at industrial legacy sites and have caused damage to the ecological environment and human health during recent decades. In view of the difficulty and high cost of post-contamination remediation, it is worth studying, and practically applying, cutoff walls to reduce the spread of pollution in advance. In this study, field-scale studies were carried out at e-waste dismantling legacy sites in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province of China, through the process of site investigation, numerical simulation, and cutoff wall practical application. Firstly, the concentrations and spatial distributions of Pb, Cd and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and poly brominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were identified in both soil and groundwater. Then, potential dispersal routes of key combined contaminants (Pb and PCBs) at the soil-groundwater interface were systematically studied through numerical simulation applying Visual MODFLOW-MT3DMS. One site was chosen to predict the barrier effect of differently sized cutoff walls based on the migration path of compound pollutants. A protocol for a cutoff wall (50 m length x 2 m width x 3 m height) was finally verified and applied at the real contaminated site for the blocking of compound pollutant diffusion. Further, the groundwater quality of the contaminated site was monitored consecutively for six months to ensure the durability and stability of barrier measures. All pollutant indicators, including for Pb and PCB complex pollutants, were reduced to below the national Grade IV groundwater standard value, achieving environmental standards at these polluted sites and providing possibilities for land reuse. In summary, this field-scale test provided new ideas for designing cutoff walls to block the diffusion of complex pollutants; it also laid a basis for the practical application of cutoff walls in pollution prevention and control of complex contaminated sites and for soil-groundwater environmental protection at industrial heritage sites.

A Calculation Method of Thermal Pore Water Pressure Considering Overconsolidation Effect for Saturated Clay SCIE

Abstract :

With the increase of soil consolidation degree, the pore water pressure induced by thermal loading drops dramatically. To conveniently and quickly calculate the thermal pore water pressure inside the soil under different overconsolidation states and quantify overconsolidation effect on thermal pore water pressure, a calculation method of thermal pore water pressure considering overconsolidation effect for saturated clay is proposed. The method is verified by the relevant experimental data, and good agreements were achieved. Through analyzing the influence mechanism of OCR on the thermal pore water pressure, three important findings were captured. (1) For overconsolidated clay, thermal pore water pressure decreases nonlinearly with the increase of OCR. (2) There is a critical threshold of OCR 4.3; when 1 < OCR <= 4.3 (slightly overconsolidated state), the ratio of compression line slope to recompression line slope (?) of overconsolidated clay is consistent with that of the normally consolidated clay, while when OCR > 4.3 (highly overconsolidated state), the value of ? is smaller than that of normally consolidated clay. (3) For highly overconsolidated clay (OCR > 4.3), considering the reducing of ? with OCR, the prediction accuracy of the thermal pore pressure calculation method has been greatly improved; especially when OCR equals 30, the prediction accuracy improves by 92.7% as temperature change achieves 35 degrees C.

Abstract :

This research presents a simulation of hydraulic fracturing process in a naturally fractured reservoir based on a discrete fracture network (DFN) model coupling different kinds of pre-existing discontinuities. Natural fractures and bedding planes obtained from outcrops and downhole camera in the Ordos Basin of China are used to build a three-dimensional DFN model. The propagation of hydraulic fractures in the layered and naturally-fractured reservoir, and the complex interactions between hydraulic fractures, natural fractures and bedding planes are simulated using the displacement discontinuity method. The results show that strong interactions between hydraulic fractures and pre-existing discontinuities occur during fluid injection, causing complex fracture geometry. When the injection rate is 0.01 m3/min, only one major hydraulic fracture is induced, and crack growth along bedding interface does not occur since the fluid pressure is not high enough. With increasing injection rate (0.1 m3/min and 1.0 m3/min), natural fracture and bedding planes are activated, inducing multiple major hydraulic fractures and reticulated fractures. For each injection scheme, fracture geometry in the horizontal and vertical directions becomes more complex with the injection of fracturing fluid. However, fracture complexity in the horizontal direction is smaller than that in the vertical direction when the injection rate varies from 0.01 m3/ min to 1.0 m3/min. Besides, the results show that injection rate has a strong positive influence on the increment of fracture complexity.

Water Control Optimization Method of Foundation Pit with Suspended Waterproof Curtain EI

Abstract :

The calculation formulas for water inflow of a circular foundation pit with different insertion depths of waterproof curtain are proposed based on the principle of seepage continuity of groundwater and Darcy's law. The analytical solution of ground subsidence outside the foundation pit with different insertion depths of waterproof curtain is proposed according to the method of resistance coefficient widely used in ship engineering in China. Finally, an applicable procedure of dewatering of foundation pit with waterproof curtain partially penetrating aquifers was developed, in which water control cost is set as the target, and ground subsidence and groundwater inflow are set as the constraints conditions considering both safety and economy of foundation pit design. The proposed optimization method for water control was applied in a project site in Tongzhou district, Beijing. © 2021, Editorial Department of Journal of Northeastern University. 暗挖车站地下连续墙施工地表沉降分析

工程建设中地下水资源保护问题一直是社会各界关注的焦点.以国内首例城市地铁PBA暗挖车站边导洞内施工地下连续墙止水工程为依托,采用MIDAS/GTS NX软件重点模拟了导洞内地下连续墙施工前、施工中及施工后的地表沉降变化规律,并与现场监测数据进行对比分析.结果表明:1)地下连续墙施工前,地表沉降曲线以车站中线为中心,呈明显对称的沉降槽形式分布;2)地下连续墙施工中,单侧地下连续墙施工完成,其上方地表附近沉降影响最为明显,地表沉降量增量约占总沉降量的25%;3)左右两侧地下连续墙施工完成后,地表沉降量增量曲线类似W型;4)左右侧地连墙分别施工6幅以后,上方地表处沉降趋于稳定,沉降速率基本保持不变.

Abstract :

基于地下水渗流连续性原理并结合达西定律,推导出了止水帷幕在不同插入深度下的圆形基坑涌水量计算公式.在此基础上,借鉴我国船舶工程中广泛采用的阻力系数法,提出了考虑悬挂式止水帷幕的地表沉降量计算方法.最后综合涌水量和地面沉降计算方法,以控水成本为目标,以基坑涌水量和坑外地面沉降量为约束条件,建立了一套完整的兼顾基坑设计安全性和经济性的悬挂式止水帷幕基坑控水设计优化方法,并以北京市通州区某工程场地为例,对所建立的控水优化方法进行了具体应用.

红土镍矿尾渣三轴抗剪强度试验研究

Abstract :

抗剪强度指标的准确测定对尾渣堆场的设计和稳定性评价具有非常重要的意义。采用TSZ-2全自动三轴仪,开展了三种不同含水率条件下的红土镍矿尾渣试样固结不排水强度试验,确定了红土镍矿尾渣的应力-应变、孔隙水压力及抗剪强度指标的变化规律。试验结果表明:红土镍矿尾渣的应力-应变关系呈应变硬化型;尾渣含水率接近最优含水率时,孔压-应变关系表现出剪胀倾向,含水率为31%时,孔压-应变关系表现出剪缩倾向;随着含水率的增加,尾渣的有效黏聚力逐渐减小,有效内摩擦角逐渐增大;尾渣的黏聚力受含水率影响较大。
