Graphene oxide membranes with stable porous structure for ultrafast water transport. PubMed

Abstract :

The robustness of carbon nanomaterials and their potential for ultrahigh permeability has drawn substantial interest for separation processes. However, graphene oxide membranes (GOms) have demonstrated limited viability due to instabilities in their microstructure that lead to failure under cross-flow conditions and applied hydraulic pressure. Here we present a highly stable and ultrapermeable zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-nanocrystal-hybridized GOm that is prepared by ice templating and subsequent in situ crystallization of ZIF-8 at the nanosheet edges. The selective growth of ZIF-8 in the microporous defects enlarges the interlayer spacings while also imparting mechanical integrity to the laminate framework, thus producing a stable microstructure capable of maintaining a water permeability of 60 l m-2 h-1 bar-1 (30-fold higher than GOm) for 180 h. Furthermore, the mitigation of microporous defects via ZIF-8 growth increased the permselectivity of methyl blue molecules sixfold. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance was employed to characterize the porous structure of our membranes and confirm the tailored growth of ZIF-8. Our technique for tuning the membrane microstructure opens opportunities for developing next-generation nanofiltration membranes.

Abstract :

A defect-free, robust and selective barrier is essential for manufacturing membranes with targeted high permeability and selectivity. Here we report a new route to engineering a separation composite membrane by confining both channels in nanoscale metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and charges in a polyelectrolyte in the inner space of a porous supportviaa counter-diffusion method. A simple thermal annealing treatment of the interface between the MOF, polymer and support favorably reduced voids inside this nano-confinement environment. As this composite membrane combines both the support and barrier as one, it minimizes mass transfer resistance of water molecules. In a separation test, it readily achieved the state-of-the-art permeance. This simple chemical approach to upgrade membrane structures will offer wide opportunities in separation devices.

Abstract :

Building up selective mass transfer channels in polymeric membranes is a promising strategy to fabricate effective separation membranes. Herein, a thioether-functionalized hydrazone-linked covalent organic framework, COF-LZU8, pre-modified by Ag ion, was incorporated for constructing aromatic selective channels within a commercial poly (ether-block amide) (Pebax 2533) membrane. The inside nanochannels of resulting membrane were effectively confirmed by measuring the affinity and the selective free volume to toluene via quartz crystal microbalance and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance. Owing to the selective channels, the Ag-COF-LZU8/Pebax membrane presented a considerably enhanced performance for toluene/n-heptane separation comparing with pristine Pebax membranes. The optimized membrane could perform a permeation flux of 293 g/m(2)h and a separation factor of 4.03 for the separation of 50 wt% toluene/n-heptane mixture.

Recovery of bio-butanol from aqueous solution with ZIF-8 modified graphene oxide composite membrane SCIE

WoS CC Cited Count: 23
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Recovery of butanol is a potential biofuel production process, which can be achieved through membrane separation technology. In this study, Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) modified graphene oxide (ZGO) with polyether block amide (PEBA) was deposited on ceramic tubular substrate to prepare composite membrane for bio-butanol recovery. ZGO laminates can be used to form transport channels for butanol molecules to enhance the permeance. The affinity of laminate to butanol was improved because of the hydrophobic ZIF-8 particles. Therefore, the separation performance of ZGO/PEBA membrane was enhanced. The microstructure and chemical property of the ZGO/PEBA membranes were characterized. Different preparation and operation conditions were also investigated to optimize the separation performance. Moreover, ZGO/PEBA composite membranes were evaluated in model acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) solution, which also exhibited high butanol recovery performance. Therefore, this facile strategy may provide a potential application in the commercialized ABE fermentation process.

Enhanced permeance for PDMS organic solvent nanofiltration membranes using modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles SCIE

Abstract :

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) is emerging as an efficient and emerging approach for separation and purification of solute from organic solvents, which however were severely underdeveloped because of the low permeance of membranes. Herein, a novel mixed matrix membrane (MMM) was developed by incorporation of modified mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) into commercially-available polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix for removal of trace impurities, such as Evans blue or vitamin B12, from different organic solvents. Notably, because of the designed nanoscale spaces originated from MSN, the permeance of the optimized MMM reached up to 31.2 L m(-2).h(-1).MPa-1, around 17-fold enhancement compared with that of pristine PDMS membrane. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance was employed to trace the solvent state in the MMM. The MMM exhibited high MeOH absorption capability but low-swelling attribute, certificating the high permeance and long-term stability of the MMM. The MMM was stably tested in MeOH solution for more than 80 h, indicating the great promise for future practical OSN applications.

Abstract :

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) is an emerging membrane-based technology for molecular separation. The design and fabrication of membranes with unique structures are important to obtain high performance. Herein, ZIF-8 nanoparticles are grown in situ on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and then assembled on a tubular ceramic substrate through a vacuum-assisted assembly method. ZIF-8 anchored on the GO nanosheets is evolved into ZnS polyhedra with a hollow structure through in situ sulfurization. The formed ZnS@GO membrane is composed of a layered structure of GO with the interlayer intercalated by ZnS hollow polyhedra and demonstrates high permeance for organic solvents. Compared to that of the ZIF-8@GO membrane, the permeance of the ZnS@GO membrane is enhanced by 4.4-fold when separating dyes from methanol, indicating their promising potential in the application of organic solvent nanofiltration.

3D re-crosslinking of an acid-resistant layer on NaA tubular membrane for application in acidic feed SCIE

Abstract :

NaA membranes are recognized as one of the most promising materials for fabrication of high-performance pervaporation membrane for dehydration, which has been widely employed in dehydration industry. However, the chemical structure breakage of NaA in acidic conditions severely hampered the application of NaA membrane in purification of biomass fermentation. In order to overcome this bottleneck, we proposed construction of a protective acid-resistant skin on the 3D surface of NaA tube. The protective layer was prepared by self-assembly of sodium alginate (SA) and CaCl2, which formed the 'egg-box' network via crosslinking SA with Ca2+. The effect of cross-linking, SA concentration, layer numbers and operation pH on the membrane performance was investigated. When applied for pervaporation at acidic feed, the protective skin was partly broken, but it can be re-crosslinked again by simple ionic exchange to form a solid acid-resistant skin. After the re-crosslinking treatment, the performance of membrane can be recovered (the water content in the permeate and the flux were 99.6 wt% and 860 g/(m(2)h), respectively) with operation condition at pH = 2. Notably, the membrane can be continuously operated in acid feed for 100 h and showed no obvious performance degradation.
