Ternary CuZnPd Nanoalloys Achieving the Synergy of an Electronic Interaction and Bifunctional Catalysis for Efficient Ethanol Electrooxidation SCIE

Abstract :

Rationally constructing nanoalloys achieving the synergy of multiple interactions among different constituents could substantially enhance the electrocatalytic performance of an active metal for a given chemical reaction. In this context, we design and synthesize well-controlled ternary CuZnPd alloy nanoparticles, in which the Cu atoms modify the electronic configuration of Pd atoms through the ligand effect or the lattice strain effect, while the Zn atoms clean their neighboring Pd sites through a bifunctional mechanism, and the synergy of these two benefits endows the ternary CuZnPd alloy nanoparticles with exceptional electrocatalysis for a room-temperature ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). In specific, at an appropriate 1/1/1 molar ratio for Cu/Zn/Pd, the as-prepared ternary CuZnPd alloy nanoparticles exhibit both the highest specific activity and mass activity of 17.3 mA cm(-2) and 11.8 A mg(-1), respectively, which outperform those of their CuPd, ZnPd alloy counterparts and the commercial Pd/C catalyst, as well as the majority of recently reported Pd-based catalysts. Density functional theory calculations verify that the key CO* and CH3CHO* intermediates generated during the EOR have the lowest adsorption energy on the ternary CuZnPd alloy nanoparticles, which is responsible for their boosted EOR electrocatalysis.

Abstract :

Here, polyhedral nickel-tungsten oxide (NiWO) precursor was prepared on nickel foam via the one-step hydrothermal method, and then it was phosphatized at different temperatures to obtain the plate nickel-tungsten phosphide (NiWP)@polyhedral NiWO composite electrocatalyst. The results showed that optimizing phosphating temperature can significantly improve the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of the plate NiWP@polyhedron NiWO. When the phosphating temperature was 450 degrees C, it exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution catalytic activity with an overpotential of 115 mV to achieve 10 mA center dot cm(-2). The Tafel slope was 85 mV center dot dec(-1), which was similar to Pt. In addition, the 24 h long-term stability test showed that the electrocatalyst had good stability. This excellent performance can be attributed to the fact that the plate NiWP@polyhedral NiWO composite structure increases the catalytic active area, reduces the charge/mass transfer resistance, accelerates the electron transfer rate, and increases the reaction kinetics performance.

Abstract :

Three electrode materials of nickel-cobalt hydroxide, nickel-iron hydroxide, and nickel-cobalt-iron hydroxide were synthesized on nickel foam (NF) via a one-step solvothermal method. The electrochemical tests showed that the ternary nickel-cobalt-iron metal electrode with the best energy storage performance outperforms the other two binary metal electrodes, and it could reach an area capacitance of 5.11 F.cm(-2) at a current density of 2 mA.cm(-2). To further investigate the practical application, an asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled with NiCoFe - OH/NF as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, respectively, and the device achieved a maximum energy density of 5.994 Wh.m(-2) at a power density of 46.814 W.m(-2). The results show that the excellent performance of NiCoFe - OH/NF can be attributed to loosen flocculent structure, which provides larger specific surface area per unit volume and subsequently store more electric charges, as well as facilitate electron/ion transportation, reduce the contact resistance between active material and electrolyte, and increase the electrical conductivity.

Abstract :

Although transition-metal-based phosphides as cost-effective catalysts have great potential for transforming water to hydrogen, their electrocatalytic property for industrial application is still limited. Herein, we focus on developing amorphous NiCoP with dandelion-like arrays anchored on nanowires through a universal strategy of hydrothermal and phosphorization. The hierarchical structure features in larger catalytic surface areas expedited reaction kinetics and improved structural stability. Benefiting from these merits, the NiCoP reaches 10 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of mere 57 mV for a hydrogen evolution reaction in standard solution. Also, a profound activity for the generation of oxygen is along with it, which requires 276 mV to attain 10 mA cm(-2). Moreover, it demonstrates satisfying durability for both processes.

Thermal Reliability of Gold Film on the Surface of Tungsten Helix SCIE CSCD PKU

Abstract :

Tungsten helix is a component of transfer wave tube (TWT), whose high frequency loss and heat dissipation become serious with increasing of power level and working frequency of TWT. To solve the problems, gold thin films were deposited on the surface of helix in our previous work. But how could we ensure the thermal reliability of gold thin films when helix operates at higher temperature? In the present paper, the binding force between gold film and the substrate was tested by nanoscratch. The film binding forces of samples with pre-plating copper for 5, 10, 15, 20 s and then plating gold for 1.5 h before and after heat treatment were analyzed. The results indicate that the films adhesion of samples after heat treatment show no obvious decrease compared with that of as-deposited samples. However, the binding force increases for the sample with pre-plating copper for 10 s after heat treatment. The thermal reliability of gold films is fine.

Abstract :

Helix as a key component of traveling wave tube (TWT) for amplifying microwave signal is traditionally made of tungsten, because tungsten has high melting point and good mechanical strength. However, high resistivity and poor thermal conductivity of tungsten limit the further development of high-power TWT. Here, we design and synthesize Cu/Au composite film on the surface of helix based on electromagnetic wave transmission mechanism. The output power of coated helix TWT was obviously improved. The thickness and thermal reliability of Cu/Au composite film having important effects on the output power of TWT were investigated.

Abstract :

A transition layer was applied to improve the quality of gold films electrodeposited on tungsten helix. The morphology and the component of deposits were evaluated by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), respectively. The results indicate that the thickness of the transition layer affects the quality of gold films. The transition layer is thin, which leads to a low covering power of gold films. To the contrary, Au-Cu alloy with high copper content formed due to diffusion will be melted at high temperature. As a result, peeling and spalling occur on the gold films The appropriate thickness of transition layer would be deposited at 10 s.

Abstract :

To control the surface quality of gold films electrodeposited on tungsten helix, the effects of current density, electrolytic temperature and deposition time on the electrodeposits were studied. The morphology of gold films was evaluated by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicate that current density affects the grain size of the film. When electrodepositing at higher current density, the surface defects such as burring and sponge feature the gold film. The electrolytic temperature causes poorer stability of electrolytic solution and deposition quality. In addition, the variation of deposition time results in different electrodeposits quality. With increasing the deposition time, the edge effect is serious. The proper deposition time is about 1.5 h.

Multiscale grain structure and mechanical properties of bulk copper EI CSCD PKU

Abstract :

To improve the ductility of bulk electrodeposited copper, the microstructural (grain size, dislocation defects etc.) evolution and the mechanical properties of the bulk copper annealed at above 500°C were mainly investigated. The results showed that there existed normal grain growth and abnormal grain growth in the samples annealed in the temperature range of 500~560°C. After annealing at 530°C for 2 h, compared with the sample annealed at 500°C, the strength was enhanced abnormally, but at the same time the ductility remained. The abnormal variation of properties was proved to be related to the uniform multiscale grain structures introduced by annealing at 530deg;C and the changes of dislocations and twins. The high strength derived from the copious boundaries of ultrafine grains which could hinder the movement of dislocations and the ductility originated from the micron grains embedded in the matrix of ultrafine grains which could contain more dislocations. Meanwhile, the internal dislocation defects decreased, which promoted the grain to further bear the dislocation generated by tensile deformation and finally improved the plasticity. The density of twin and the thickness of twin lamellar relatively increased. Twin boundaries could also hinder dislocation motion to improve the strength of the material. The thicker twins could absorb dislocations to improve the plasticity. The variation of twins is helpful to improve the mechanical properties of the materials.
