Resilience Assessment of Urban Water Distribution Networks under Disturbance Influence of Aftershocks SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 31 (1) | JOURNAL OF INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEMS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Water distribution networks (WDNs) are essential for urban water supply and postearthquake recovery. Conducting a seismic resilience assessment of a WDN and taking corresponding improvement measures can improve the disaster resistance capacity of the water system. A number of previous studies have evaluated the seismic resilience of WDNs, but seldom have taken into account the impact of aftershock disturbances. Aftershock disturbances may aggravate the damage to water distribution networks, prolong the repair time and reduce the recovery ability of WDNs. This study presents an improved framework for assessing WDN resilience considering aftershock disturbances. The stochastic principle and the elliptic ground vibration attenuation model were utilized to determine the spatial distribution of site ground vibration under the mainshock and aftershock. A superposition damage assumption was applied to incorporate aftershock effects in Monte Carlo simulations, and the pressure-driven analysis (PDA) and discrete-event simulation (DES) models were used to analyze the postearthquake hydraulic balance and model the restoration process. By constructing various scenarios, the probabilistic characteristic parameters of resilience indexes and the relationship between WDN resilience metrics and parameters related to aftershocks were investigated. A case study of a real WDN in China demonstrated that there is a correlation between aftershock-related parameters and resilience indexes. Moreover, relying solely on one resilience metric is insufficient for comprehensively understanding the seismic capacity of WDNs.

Abstract :

Catastrophe theory was used to establish a safety assessment model to reduce the reliance on subjective judgments in evaluation of timber-framed heritage buildings. This study was conducted in three phases. Initially, a comprehensive evaluation index system was established from the perspective of foundation. It consisted of eight aspects and 25 safety evaluation indicators using superstructure load-bearing elements, maintenance structures, and their interconnections in timber-framed heritage buildings. The 25 safety evaluation indicators included foundation, base, stone piers, columns, beams, lintels (beams, pads, and other bending components), bracket sets, arches, maintenance walls, beam-brace connections, and roof structures. The bottom-level indicators in the index system were dimensionless. The second phase employed typical catastrophe models (cusp, swallowtail, and butterfly) for normalization, resulting in calculated catastrophe scales and evaluation levels. The case study of the Buddha Hall of Zhihua Temple, Beijing, was applied in the final phase. It was found that the catastrophe scales method solved the subjectivity issues in determining weights. Additionally, the calculations were found to be concise and reliable, providing accurate results. The model can be used as a theoretical reference for the future safety assessment of timber-framed heritage buildings.

Abstract :

The effectiveness of the modernization of the governance system is significantly impacted by the interaction between the territorial spatial development intensity (TSDI) and the comprehensive disaster-carrying capacity (CDCC). It is of great significance to investigate the intrinsic interaction between the TSDI and the CDCC. Identifying the disaster risks induced by the intensity of the territorial spatial development and their constraints promotes synergistic development to cope with the uncertainty. The study explored the degree of coupling, the level of coordinated development, and the dynamic development trend between TSDI and CDCC from the perspective of coupling coordination. Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) Region was used as a case study and it was found 1) there is a higher degree of coupling, and high correlation between TSDI and CDCC in the BTH urban agglomeration region; 2) the BTH region has the highest number of cities with coordination levels on the verge of maladjustment, followed by ones with barely coordinated cities; 3) while the overall level of coordination gradually increases, the overall deviation degree of development of TSDI and CDCC in the BTH urban agglomeration region is gradually decreasing; 4) there is an interactive coercion relationship between TSDI and CDCC in the BTH urban agglomeration region. This study may help provide a decision-making basis for the BTH urban agglomeration on improving the pertinence of urban disaster prevention and mitigation construction, adjusting the spatial structure of the national territory, and promoting the coordinated development of different cities. Moreover, technical support and theoretical guidance for similar regions was also developed to assess the land suitability, establish an integrated defense system of the national territory and space, and exercise resilient city planning.

Abstract :

Emergency evacuation planning in high-density communities is an important measure to improve the safety resilience of community. This study presents an optimal design method of emergency evacuation space in high-density community based on multi-agent simulation and multi-objective optimization models. The influence of community building debris caused by earthquake on evacuation passageway was analyzed. The properties of residents in the community and their characteristics of psycho-behaviors after earthquake were clarified. A simulation model for emergency evacuation in the high-density communities considering the changes of community environment and psychological-behavioral characteristics of residents was established. On the basis of evacuation simulation analysis, an optimal design method of emergency evacuation space in the high-density communities based on time satisfaction was proposed. Finally, the proposed method was applied into the two old communities, that is, Healthy West Village and Healthy New Village communities in Rugao City, to simulate and analyze the effects of factors such as building debris, psychological panic and cooperative behaviors on the evacuation process of the communities, and the evacuation organization and shelter space in communities were optimized. In view of organized evacuation of community residential buildings, the responsibility scope of emergency shelters was determined, and its scientific rationality was verified by emergency evacuation simulation.

Application of SPO2IDA in Seismic Performance Evaluation of Ancient Timber Structures SCIE AHCI

Abstract :

Ancient timber structures have a high cost for conducting dynamic time-history response analysis due to the presence of many nonlinear components, such as mortise-tenon joints and Dou-Gon. To enhance the efficiency of evaluating the seismic performance of ancient timber structures through dynamic analysis, a simplified dynamic response analysis method based on SPO2IDA was adopted to evaluate the seismic performance of a timber frame palace with nine-purlin in Qing Dynasty of China and the results were compared with those obtained using the traditional pushover analysis method. The results showed that there were only slight differences in the seismic response of the ancient timber structure determined by the two methods when the structure was in a nonlinear stage. During a IX degree rare earthquake, the displacement response differed by 0.004 m, while the median seismic intensity during the third level of damage limit state differed by 0.079 g. The traditional pushover analysis method may underestimate the seismic resistance of the ancient timber structure, but the SPO2IDA algorithm can better capture the uncertainty of the structural vulnerability model at different limit stages caused by ground motion input, achieving the goal of quickly evaluating the seismic performance of the ancient timber structure with acceptable accuracy.

Abstract :

To detect leakage in urban water distribution networks and study the relationship between monitoring information and leakage diagnosis, the XGBoost algorithm was applied to identify the leakage zone and predict the leakage level. Software was adopted to call EPANET V2.2 for analyzing a water distribution network model, and emitters were added in the middle of pipes to simulate leakage events. By changing the discharge coefficient, the leakage flow was varied in hydraulic analysis. The node pressure sensitivity matrix was calculated, and the sensor placement and pipe zones were determined using the fuzzy c-means clustering method. Different leakage scenarios were simulated, and the location and level of leakage were identified through pressure changes at monitoring points based on the XGBoost algorithm. Taking two hydraulic models of water distribution network as examples to simulate and predict, which were compared with back-propagation neural network algorithm, it was revealed that the XGBoost algorithm can not only identify the leakage zone, but also predict the leakage level well. On the basis of sensor placement by Fuzzy c-means algorithm, for different leak scenarios, the average identification accuracy of the XGBoost algorithm was 5.54% higher than that of the back-propagation neural network algorithm in leakage zone. The average prediction accuracy of the XGBoost algorithm was 2.71% higher than that of the back-propagation neural network algorithm in leakage level. The XGBoost algorithm effectively can identify the leakage of water distribution networks. (C) 2021 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract :

To accurately evaluate the modulus of elasticity in static bending (MOE) of wooden components in ancient timberwork buildings under the "minimum intervention principle," the nondestructive testing of physical and mechanical properties were conducted on larch. Using moisture content (MC), density (rho), the stress wave propagation velocity (v), the modulus of elasticity in dynamic bending (E-d), the rotational resistance value of the drilling needle (f(drill))and the resistance value of the feeding needle (f(feed)) as the main parameters, the correlation between several parameters and MOE was firstly calculated using the Gray Relation Analysis (GRA) and ranked according to the strength of the correlation. Six combinations were selected according to the ranking, and the Gene Expression Programming algorithm (GEP) was used to build models for predicting MOE. The results showed that the correlation between several parameters and MOE was good (between 0.5 and 0.8), and the prediction model established with combination 6 was the best, which indicated that the prediction model established based on GRA-GEP algorithm had a certain feasibility and effectiveness, and the combined effect of the six parameters to evaluate the MOE of wooden components of ancient buildings was better in the field inspection.
