Abstract :
The balise transmission system (BTS) is essential for train position sensing and safe operation. Transmission loss is a key parameter particularly required for the evaluation of systems. The eddy current loss (ECL), caused by the conductivity of debris, affects the transmission performance of the BTS when the balise is immersed in water. This study proposes an effective modeling for the BTS using S-parameters. Utilizing the electromagnetic coupling analysis in the near-field region, we derived an equivalent circuit with the frequency and conductivity of water taken into consideration. The S21 can be predicted accurately by using the proposed equivalent circuit. For validation, a BTS system was implemented and measured to compare with theoretically calculated results and electromagnetic simulation results in the main lobe zone. The measurement results, simulation, and calculation were in good agreement. Moreover, the modeling was used to predict the I/O characteristics of the balise. The power of the balise uplink FSK signal was measured in the water debris and found to be approximately 0.62 dB less than in air. These findings aligned well with theoretical predictions.

Abstract :
Time-frequency analysis methods is an effective tool to analyze non-stationary signals. Moreover, the utilization of postprocessing algorithms significantly enhances this analytical capability. However, these methods have certain limitations when dealing with non-stationary signals with strong time-varying laws. We put forward an adaptive linear chirplet synchroextracting transform (ALCSET) based on chirplet transform (CT) to deal with this problem. This paper first optimizes the CT by measuring Gini index to generate a time -frequency representation with accurate amplitude. Then, an improved synchroextracting operator is employed to obtain high-resolution and energy concentration time -frequency representation. The simulation experiments of nonstationary signals demonstrate that the significant advantages of the proposed method in terms of energy aggregation, noise robustness, and signal reconstruction. Furthermore, the practical value of the method is verified by the experimental signal.

Abstract :
Nondestructive estimation of residual stresses has been a major challenge in engineering. Herein, the collinear Lamb wave mixing method is proposed for residual stress measurement in metal plates under immersion ultrasonic testing. Numerical simulations have been conducted to investigate the influences of excitation parameters on the performance of the wave mixing method. The results showed that the receiver position and cycle numbers of primary waves affect the amplitude of the method, and optimal excitation parameters recommended. Ultrasonic immersion experiments are conducted on two types of plate-like specimens using the collinear Lamb wave mixing method. Experimental results showed that the proposed method is effective for measuring the residual stress in metal plates. The immersion ultrasonic testing can significantly reduce the influence of inconsistent coupling conditions between the transmitters and the specimen on experimental results, therefore it is more reliable than conventional contact testing.

Abstract :
Non-contact ultrasonic testing of debonding in honeycomb sandwich structure has been a major challenge in industry. In this study, the air-coupled local defect resonance (LDR) technique with coda wave analysis is proposed for nondestructive testing (NDT) of debonding in honeycomb sandwich structure. Numerical simulations have been conducted to visualize the LDR behavior of debonding in honeycomb sandwich structure by air- coupled excitations, and a decorrelation analysis method is proposed for determining the interval of coda wave from received signals. Results indicate that the start moment of coda wave should be determined as the time corresponding to decorrelation coefficient exceed to 0.2 and the duration is 2.5 ms. Air-coupled LDR scanning experiments were conducted on the honeycomb sandwich specimens with different deboning. Experimental results indicate that the proposed technique is effective for NDT of the debonding in honeycomb sandwich structures. The research provides an efficiency non-contact ultrasonic NDT method for honeycomb sandwich structure.

Abstract :
Magnetoacoustic emission (MAE) holds great promise for evaluating the mechanical properties of ferromagnetic materials. To refine the problems of the current theoretical and numerical models of MAE, a theoretical MAE model that considers the microscopic dependence of the hysteresis properties is proposed in this paper. The microstructure (dislocation density and grain size) and the correlation of MAE jumps are considered and incorporated into the model. Then, the influences of magnetization parameters and microstructure parameters on the envelope of the MAE signal are analyzed by the proposed theoretical model. The proposed theoretical model is then fully evaluated by simulations and experiments. The MAE experiments are conducted on ferromagnetic specimens with different hardnesses, and the MAE signals with different hardnesses are simulated by inverting the basic parameters of the MAE model with the genetic algorithm. Further, the crucial hysteresis parameters of the specimens are calculated using the results of microscopic measurements and the calculated parameters agree well with inversion results from experimental signals. The results demonstrate that the proposed theoretical model is valid for the MAE signal simulation. The trends of different hardnesses can be predicted by the MAE simulation signals. Moreover, the model can be used for theoretical analysis of the microscopic dependence of the MAE signal.

Abstract :
Ultrasonic testing of coarse-grained materials is strongly influenced by high-level scattering noise. In addition, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and spatial resolution of imaging by the traditional total focusing method (TFM) are relatively low. In this study, we focused on the reconstruction of high-resolution ultrasonic images from full matrix capture datasets. A weighted TFM image by combining the inverse problem-based method and traditional TFM is proposed to detect defects in coarse-grained steel. The proposed method was used to image defects with the full matrix data obtained through simulations and experiments. The simulation and experimental results show that the weighted total focusing method can significantly improve the SNR of ultrasonic imaging in coarse-grained steel and, moreover, it can improve the resolution of imaging and distinguish adjacent defects with a centre distance less than the Rayleigh criteria.

Abstract :
Harmonic nonlinear ultrasound can offer high sensitivity for residual stress measurements; however, it cannot be used for local stress measurements at a point in space and exhibits nonlinear distortions in the experimental system. This paper presents a feasibility study on the measurement of residual stress in a metal plate using a nonlinear Lamb wave-mixing technique. The resonant conditions for two Lamb waves to generate a mixing frequency wave are obtained via theoretical analysis. Finite element simulations are performed to investigate the nonlinear interactions between the two Lamb waves. Results show that two incident A0 waves interact in regions of material nonlinearity and generate a rightward S0 wave at the sum frequency. Residual stress measurement experiments are conducted on steel plate specimens using the collinear Lamb wave-mixing technique. By setting different delays for two transmitters, the generated sum-frequency component at different spatial locations is measured. Experimental results show that the spatial distribution of the amplitude of the sum-frequency component agrees well with the spatial distribution of the residual stress measured using X-rays. The proposed collinear Lamb wave-mixing method is effective for measuring the distribution of residual stress in metal plates.

Abstract :
As an important complement to traditional mechanical connections, bonded structures are widely used in industry. Under the combined effect of external loads and environmental factors, the performance of the bonding interface will deteriorate, which seriously affects the safe use of bonding structures. Therefore, the performance evaluation of bonding interfaces has always been a hot and difficult issue in the field of non-destructive testing. Traditional linear ultrasonic technology can effectively detect damage such as delamination and debonding in the bonding interface, but it is difficult to detect and quantitatively evaluate the early degradation of the bonding interface (such as closed defects and weak bonding). However, the nonlinear ultrasonic technology can overcome the low sensitivity of the traditional linear ultrasonic technology and is expected to be an effective means for nondestructive testing of early deterioration of bonding interface performance. In this paper, we review the recent development of nonlinear ultrasonic technology for bonding interface detection from theoretical models and testing experiments. From the perspectives of contact nonlinearity of the interface and material nonlinearity of the interlayer, we introduce relevant theoretical models for nonlinear ultrasonic inspection of bonded interfaces, such as nonlinear spring model, interface contact model and contact model considering the thickness of the interlayer. These models can be used for the description of various acoustic nonlinear effects (such as second harmonic generation, wave mixing and nonlinear resonance) generated by ultrasonic waves at weak bonding interfaces, but the ability of different models to characterize the nonlinear propagation behavior of ultrasonic waves at weak bonding interfaces needs to be further investigated. Meanwhile, we review the progress of three nonlinear techniques of nonlinear ultrasonic resonance, wave mixing and second harmonic generation in the experimental testing of bonding interface properties. The nondestructive testing of bonding interface using nonlinear ultrasonic resonance technique remains relatively limited. Mixing technology is of great interest because of its flexibility and selectability of excitation frequency, mode and area of action, and its ability to effectively avoid the effects of system nonlinearity. Among the nonlinear ultrasonic methods, harmonic techniques are the most widely used, and have been used for damage detection and performance evaluation of bonding interfaces, such as bonding thickness measurement, debonding detection, bond strength and fatigue life evaluation. The harmonic technique is considered as a possible solution for the quantitative detection of the interface properties of multilayer bonded structures. However, how to distinguish the harmonics generated by weakly bonded interfaces from those generated by detection systems has been a challenge for its application. Finally, we provide an outlook for the development of nonlinear ultrasonic detection technology for early degradation of bonding interfaces.

Abstract :
针对金属板结构安全运行需要,开展了金属板结构疲劳损伤非线性兰姆波混频检测方法研究。通过数值仿真,研究了两列A_0兰姆波与材料损伤间的非线性相互作用。结果表明,两列共线A_0兰姆波在结构材料损伤处产生单向传播的和频S_0波,且和频波幅值随传播距离具有积累增长效应。对不同疲劳程度金属板试件进行了共线混频兰姆波检测实验,结果表明,和频波幅值随试件疲劳周数的增加呈单调递增趋势,提出的兰姆波混频技术可用于金属板结构疲劳程度的表征。研究工作为金属板结构疲劳损伤检测提供了可行的技术方案。
