Effect of Pre-Added HfO2 Inclusions on Carbide Morphology and Deformation Behavior in DZ125 Nickel-Based Superalloy SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 , 14 (1) | METALS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Inclusions are important phases affecting material properties in complicated ways. In this paper, a quantitative study of the addition of HfO2 inclusions to DZ125 nickel-based superalloys was performed. Experimental results showed that the introduction of HfO2 inclusions caused a loss of strength and ductility. The carbide morphology also changed significantly from skeletal-shaped to block-shaped, resulting in a remarkable discrepancy in the fracture behavior under quasi-in-situ tensile testing. The SEM dynamic observations showed that cracks were initiated from the skeletal carbides and almost failed to propagate into the matrix. In contrast, the damage behavior of block-shaped carbides also involved internal cracking but with a tendency to form interconnected microcracks during propagation. A crystal plasticity finite element model (CPFEM) method was further developed to study the stress/strain behavior during the deformation process, considering the crystal orientations and microstructure morphologies from the EBSD data. Those elastoplastic parameters were determined through nanoindentation experiments. Simulation results verified that blocky carbides produced a pronounced strain concentration at the interface of the carbides and matrix, thereby increasing the tendency of crack formation. This paper provides a fundamental understanding of the role of inclusions in material recycling applications.

Microstructure evolution and lath martensite precipitation behavior of Co@GNPs/CoCrMo composites fabricated by selective laser melting SCIE

Abstract :

Spherical cobalt nanoparticles were reduced and deposited in situ on the graphene (GNP) surface using a novel hydrothermal method, and the prepared Co@GNPs reinforced powder were uniformly dispersed in the alloy matrix. The Co@GNPs/CoCrMo composite fabricated using selective laser melting (SLM) was densely organized with reduced hole defects, and fine equiaxed grains, elongated columnar grains, and duplex e + gamma were observed in the composite organization. Meanwhile, a high density of dislocations and nanoscale stacked layer dislocations were observed at the equiaxed grain boundaries. Further, the GNPs acted as heterogeneous nucleation sites, which promoted the transformation of the gamma-Co (FCC) austenite phase to the e-Co (HCP) martensite phase by means of slip. A unique characteristic structure of nanoscale parallel-arranged lath martensite is formed on the surface of GNPs. Therefore, a co-lattice structure between e-co and gamma-co shows the specific orientation relationship between the crystallographic plane (1 1 1)gamma-co//(0 0 0 2)e-co and the crystallographic zone axis [1 1 0]gamma co//[1 1 2 0]e-co.

Abstract :

In recent years, strain sensors have penetrated various fields. The capability of sensors to convert physical signals into electrical signals is of great importance in healthcare. However, it is still challenging to obtain sensors with high sensitivity, large operating range and low cost. In this paper, a stretchable strain sensor made of a double-layer conductive network, including a biomimetic multilayer graphene-Ecoflex (MLG-Ecoflex) substrate and a multilayer graphene-carbon nanotube (MLG-CNT) composite up-layer was developed. The combined action of the two layers led to an excellent performance with an operating range of up to 580% as well as a high sensitivity (gauge factor (GFmax) of 1517.94). In addition, a pressure sensor was further designed using the bionic vein-like structure with a multi-layer stacking of MLG-Ecoflex/MLG-CNT/MLG-Ecoflex to obtain a relatively high deformation along the direction of thickness. The device presented a high sensing performance (up to a sensitivity of 0.344 kPa-1) capable of monitoring small movements of the human body such as vocalizations and gestures. The good performance of the sensors together with a simple fabrication procedure (flip-molding) make it of potential use for some applications, for example human health monitoring and other areas of human interaction.

Visual Strain Sensors Based on Fabry-Perot Structures for Structural Integrity Monitoring SCIE

Abstract :

Strain sensors that can rapidly and efficiently detect strain distribution and magnitude are crucial for structural health monitoring and human-computer interactions. However, traditional electrical and optical strain sensors make access to structural health information challenging because data conversion is required, and they have intricate, delicate designs. Drawing inspiration from the moisture-responsive coloration of beetle wing sheaths, we propose using Ecoflex as a flexible substrate. This substrate is coated with a Fabry-Perot (F-P) optical structure, comprising a "reflective layer/stretchable interference cavity/reflective layer", creating a dynamic color-changing visual strain sensor. Upon the application of external stress, the flexible interference chamber of the sensor stretches and contracts, prompting a blue-shift in the structural reflection curve and displaying varying colors that correlate with the applied strain. The innovative flexible sensor can be attached to complex-shaped components, enabling the visual detection of structural integrity. This biomimetic visual strain sensor holds significant promise for real-time structural health monitoring applications.

Data-Driven Strain Sensor Design Based on a Knowledge Graph Framework SCIE

Abstract :

Wearable flexible strain sensors require different performance depending on the application scenario. However, developing strain sensors based solely on experiments is time-consuming and often produces suboptimal results. This study utilized sensor knowledge to reduce knowledge redundancy and explore designs. A framework combining knowledge graphs and graph representational learning methods was proposed to identify targeted performance, decipher hidden information, and discover new designs. Unlike process-parameter-based machine learning methods, it used the relationship as semantic features to improve prediction precision (up to 0.81). Based on the proposed framework, a strain sensor was designed and tested, demonstrating a wide strain range (300%) and closely matching predicted performance. This predicted sensor performance outperforms similar materials. Overall, the present work is favorable to design constraints and paves the way for the long-awaited implementation of text-mining-based knowledge management for sensor systems, which will facilitate the intelligent sensor design process.

Simulations of a Wide-Gamut and Angle-Dependent Color Reflector by Addition of a Nanometer-Thick Interference Medium in a Fabry-Perot Structure SCIE

Abstract :

Traditional Fabry-Perot (F-P) structurescomprising"metal/interference medium/phase-change material (PCM)"(MIP) nanostructures have achieved a color gamut close to the standardRGB (sRGB) space. However, the narrow absorption band in the visibleregion hinders further improvement in the gamut. Nonetheless, a largegamut is critical for display and imaging devices. This paper proposesa reflector nanostructure consisting of "metal/interferencemedium/phase-change materials (PCMs)/interference medium" (MIPI)to regulate the optical reflection in the visible waveband. We performedsimulations to demonstrate that the addition of a 100-250-nm-thickinterference medium causes the structure to change from a single tocompound interference effect, thus significantly expanding the gamut(51% larger than that of the traditional MIP structure). The influencesof the structure geometry and phase changes of the PCM layer on thespectral regulation were analyzed by combining experimental and simulationmethods. The results indicate that the proposed structure covers almostthe entire sRGB gamut. Moreover, adding the second interference mediuminduces a longer optical path of the incident light, which rendersthe structure color-sensitive to the observation angle, thus allowingfor the demonstration of an anti-counterfeiting application. Thisnanoscale MIPI design can serve as a basis for the realization ofcolor-regulation devices and encryption applications.

Effect of Thermal Cycling on Grain Evolution and Micro-Segregation in Selective Laser Melting of FGH96 Superalloy SCIE
期刊论文 | 2023 , 13 (1) | METALS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Extremely rapid heating and cooling rates during the additive manufacturing (AM) process generate complicated thermal cycles, which affect the microstructure evolution and ultimate mechanical properties of the alloy. In this paper, FGH96 blocks with a height of 6 mm were prepared by selective laser melting (SLM) and the microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Comparing specimens of varying heights, it was found that subsequent thermal cycles (STC) coarsened some solidified grains and accelerated the grain growth along the build direction, together with an increase in texture intensity and high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs). After coarsening the grains in the middle portion of the built block, finer grains were observed near the top area due to a faster cooling rate. There were numerous dislocations in the grain because of the occurrence of unequal internal tension. In the middle of the sample with stable thermal cycles, the dislocations were both perpendicular to the grain growth direction and 45 degrees off it. In spite of the texture characteristics, the segregation of elements was also found to be influenced by thermal cycling. Inherent reheating leads to the increase in the Laves phase and the decrease in the gamma' phase as subsequent deposition. This was also one of the reasons why the microhardness of the sample decreased as the building height and the other reason being the decrease in the solution treatment of the later sediments.

Modeling of the Effect of Secondary Orientation on the Micro Deformation Behavior of Ni-Based Single Crystal Superalloys SCIE
期刊论文 | 2022 , 12 (2) | METALS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

In this paper, a supercell modeling of secondary orientation was established using 90 cubic mosaic units made up of gamma' phase embedded in gamma matrix, in accordance with an actual structure of Ni-based single crystal superalloys (NSCS). The effects of secondary orientation on the deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of NSCS under uniaxial tensile were studied by a three-dimensional molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Simulation results showed that secondary orientation had a significant effect on mechanical properties of NSCS, that is, a big fluctuation was found in tensile strength which dropped down almost 50% from a peak (corresponding to the secondary orientations of 18 degrees and 45 degrees) to a trough (those of 34 degrees and 63 degrees). Mechanisms of secondary orientation affecting the deformation behavior were further discussed systematically. The deformation of NSCS under uniaxial tensile was a process tending towards amorphization of microstructure, together with the dislocation formation, merging and break-up. On a micro viewpoint, this work for us will be useful to apprehend the tensile deformation conduct of NSCS.

Effects of Thermal Stress on the Formation and Cracking Behavior of Nickel-Based Superalloys by Selective Laser Melting Based on a Coupled Thermo-Mechanical Model SCIE
期刊论文 | 2022 , 15 (24) | MATERIALS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Complex thermal cycles and stress fields commonly occur in the selective laser melting process for nickel-based superalloys, which are prone to generating cracks and decreasing the performance of forming parts. In this paper, the reasons for cracking were analyzed by combining the experiment with the evolution behavior of the temperature field/stress field during the solidification process of a nickel-based superalloy (FGH96) via a three-dimensional finite element thermo-mechanical coupling model. It showed that a radial temperature distribution of the melting pool led to a similar distributed stress; as a result, the value declined slowly along the scanning direction but declined quickly along the direction perpendicular to the scanning direction. A stress concentration with maximum stress up to 339 MPa was found at the center of the molten pool, easily causing a crack in SLM. It was found that both the initiation and propagation of the cracks were along the grain growth direction and were affected by the epitaxial growth of columnar crystals. For the case of process parameters with relatively high power or low scanning speed, the stress value of the molten pool during solidification was more than 370 MPa so as to form a large area of cracks. The adjustment of the rotation angle between the adjacent layers was effective at avoiding stress accumulation in the building direction and prevent the formation of long grain boundaries, thus avoiding crack propagation. The present study lays a foundation for the wide applications of selective laser melting technologies in nickel-based superalloys.

Design of Ultra-High Extinction Ratio TM- and TE-Pass Polarizers Based on Si-Sc0.2Sb2Te3 Hybrid Waveguide SCIE

Abstract :

The selective polarizers play an important role in silicon-based integrated circuits. The previous polarizers based on silicon waveguides have the defects of large scale and low extinction ratio. In this work, TM- and TE-pass polarizers only 10 mu m long were developed based on phase-change material of Sc0.2Sb2Te3 (SST) hybrid silicon waveguide, where several SST bars with a varied distance was designed. Because of the excellent characteristics of the refractive index of the material, ultra-high extinction ratios (ERs) were achieved. A 3-D finite element simulation was carried out to optimize the structure of the polarizers, and the distribution of light field, as well as the transmission behavior of TE and TM modes in the two polarizers, was further demonstrated in detail. When the SST is crystalline, the unwanted mode can be attenuated, while the wanted mode can pass through with low loss. Compared with the GST-based polarizers, the proposed ones achieved high extinction ratios of similar to 43.12 dB (TM-pass one) and similar to 44.21 dB (TE-pass one), respectively; at the same time, ILs for the wanted modes could be negligible. The design of high-performance polarizers paves a new way for applications of all-optical integrated circuits.
