Design, Implementation and Environmental Impact of Cutoff Wall for Pollution Control in an Industrial Legacy Site SCIE

Abstract :

Heavy metal-organic pollutants compound pollution at industrial legacy sites and have caused damage to the ecological environment and human health during recent decades. In view of the difficulty and high cost of post-contamination remediation, it is worth studying, and practically applying, cutoff walls to reduce the spread of pollution in advance. In this study, field-scale studies were carried out at e-waste dismantling legacy sites in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province of China, through the process of site investigation, numerical simulation, and cutoff wall practical application. Firstly, the concentrations and spatial distributions of Pb, Cd and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and poly brominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were identified in both soil and groundwater. Then, potential dispersal routes of key combined contaminants (Pb and PCBs) at the soil-groundwater interface were systematically studied through numerical simulation applying Visual MODFLOW-MT3DMS. One site was chosen to predict the barrier effect of differently sized cutoff walls based on the migration path of compound pollutants. A protocol for a cutoff wall (50 m length x 2 m width x 3 m height) was finally verified and applied at the real contaminated site for the blocking of compound pollutant diffusion. Further, the groundwater quality of the contaminated site was monitored consecutively for six months to ensure the durability and stability of barrier measures. All pollutant indicators, including for Pb and PCB complex pollutants, were reduced to below the national Grade IV groundwater standard value, achieving environmental standards at these polluted sites and providing possibilities for land reuse. In summary, this field-scale test provided new ideas for designing cutoff walls to block the diffusion of complex pollutants; it also laid a basis for the practical application of cutoff walls in pollution prevention and control of complex contaminated sites and for soil-groundwater environmental protection at industrial heritage sites.

本发明公开了一种以粉质粘土为母土的复合阻隔材料及其制备方法和应用。本发明按照质量百分比计,由72%的固体颗粒和28%的水构成;按照质量百分比计,固体颗粒由91%的土壤、5%的膨润土和4%的活性炭构成。本发明提供的复合材料制备简单、成本低,防渗能力强并且对重金属有很好的吸附能力,长效阻隔能力强,解决了重金属侵蚀环境下常规阻隔材料服役性能不足的问题,可应用于工业污染场地的治理与修复工程中。

With the increase of soil consolidation degree, the pore water pressure induced by thermal loading drops dramatically. To conveniently and quickly calculate the thermal pore water pressure inside the soil under different overconsolidation states and quantify overconsolidation effect on thermal pore water pressure, a calculation method of thermal pore water pressure considering overconsolidation effect for saturated clay is proposed. The method is verified by the relevant experimental data, and good agreements were achieved. Through analyzing the influence mechanism of OCR on the thermal pore water pressure, three important findings were captured. (1) For overconsolidated clay, thermal pore water pressure decreases nonlinearly with the increase of OCR. (2) There is a critical threshold of OCR 4.3; when 1 < OCR <= 4.3 (slightly overconsolidated state), the ratio of compression line slope to recompression line slope (?) of overconsolidated clay is consistent with that of the normally consolidated clay, while when OCR > 4.3 (highly overconsolidated state), the value of ? is smaller than that of normally consolidated clay. (3) For highly overconsolidated clay (OCR > 4.3), considering the reducing of ? with OCR, the prediction accuracy of the thermal pore pressure calculation method has been greatly improved; especially when OCR equals 30, the prediction accuracy improves by 92.7% as temperature change achieves 35 degrees C.

本发明公开了一种基于离散元与合成岩体技术的岩质边坡建模方法,首先,现场采集裂隙数据,求取裂隙分布函数;现场采集岩块与含裂隙岩块样本进行室内力学试验得到岩块与裂隙的力学参数;利用边坡剖面建立离散元边坡模型;利用裂隙分布函数构建边坡离散裂隙网络模型DFN,将离散元边坡模型与裂隙网络模型组合;最后模拟与实验室相同的力学试验,对照宏观力学参数对颗粒间的接触的细观参数进行标定,将标定结果用到组合模型中,裂隙岩体边坡模型建模完成。本发明充分考虑到裂隙的离散性与裂隙岩体的力学特性,真实反映现实中裂隙的空间分布特征,模型可用于边坡稳定性分析及滑坡运动过程反演等问题时,结果较现有技术真实可靠。

Abstract :

It is well established that clays can exhibit semipermeable membrane behavior and osmotic efficiency is used to describe the membrane behavior of clays. Several experimental results have already verified that osmotic efficiency is not constant when pore-fluid chemistry changes. In this article, based on the mechanical balance, generalized Darcy's law and the principle of mass conservation, an improved fully coupled hydro-chemo-mechanical model is proposed for saturated clayey materials, in which osmotic efficiency is treated as a variable that depends on the solute concentration, grain density, porosity of soil, and cation exchange capacity. Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the influence of variable osmotic efficiency on solute transport. The results show that solute transport is very sensitive to osmotic efficiency and when the transport time is 10 years, the difference in influence depth reaches about 13.6 cm with constant (0.069) and variable (initially 0.069) osmotic efficiencies, this indicates that semipermeable membrane behavior of clays with variable osmotic efficiency restricts the solute transport effectively and slows down the solute movement strongly. The difference in breakthrough time reaches 15.8 years with osmotic efficiency (0.069). The proposed coupled model can be used to guide the design of clay liners and evaluate their service performance.

Clays are widely used in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering applications and it is crucial to understand its behaviour for the dynamic field conditions. The presence of a temperature gradient across clayey soils that exhibit semi-permeable membrane (or osmotic) behaviour may promote a number of complex processes, including thermal expansion or consolidation, thermally induced osmosis, thermal diffusion, along with other flow and deformation processes. Chemical-osmosis and chemico-osmotic consolidation that are significant in isothermal conditions are also affected by temperature. Publications on chemical-osmosis, and to some extent thermo-osmosis behaviour of semi-permeable clays under coupled conditions are widely available. However, studies that include the influence of both thermo-osmosis and chemical-osmosis together are rare. In this paper, a fully coupled numerical model is presented to study the effects of both osmotic processes on thermo-hydromechanical-chemical behaviour of semi-permeable clays. Solute spread in a landfill clay liner is investigated under the combined influence of mechanical, thermal, and chemical loading. Model results show that the clay deformation is sensitive to thermo-osmosis; and the effects of thermo-osmotic consolidation, excess pore water dissipation, and the overall settlement increases with temperature. Variation of the source temperature from 40 degrees C to 80 degrees C yielded an increase of 11.3% of the peak soil settlement. Significant contribution of thermoosmosis on solute transport is noticed in this study and ignoring the process substantially deviate from the realism. Up to 80% overprediction of cadmium spread is observed in the clay liner when the thermo-osmotic processes are neglected.
